Re: 1921-P D1 scribbles help needed

I found it - in my "I Don't Know What It Is" box. The scribbles on mine are not as defined as on yours, but the scribbles on the 4th and 5th UTF match. WIN_20191214_15_01_46_Pro.jpg Here is the bow: WIN_20191214_15_02_04_Pro.jpg The cap looks doubled. WIN_20191214_15_03_20_Pro.jpg I have two example...

I'll take a stab at it.

Anything doubled on the obverse?

1921-D VAM-BL

This is an EDS of 21-D VAM-BL. It lacks the gouge through the "O" of DOLLAR, but the other markers are there.

It has very nice scribbles.

Interestingly, this is the holder it is in.

1921-P VAM 112A

The unattributed coin at the end of the D1 Crack and Break Guide appears to be VAM 112A.

Re: GSA with a little something, um, well, extra

Unless and until encapsulation takes place inside of a "clean room," which ain't gonna happen, you're gonna find and keep finding all sorts of common particulate debris inside of slabs, on occasion.. I don't think you need a clean room to do a better job in minimizing such junk. I sent both holders...

Re: GSA with a little something, um, well, extra

It might be fun to have a section on encapsulated Morgans with "debris" in the holder. I am amazed at how much detritus finds its way into PCGS and NGC holders.

I'll go first. Check out the denticles below the "9".

Re: Interesting GSA dollar

Casinos apparently also used sandblasting to make the dollars un-collectible.

See here.

The light and shadow suggest a raised feature (compare to date numerals) but hard to tell.

Is the third photo an enlargement of the first photo or a separate (and higher magnification) photo?

Without any research whatsoever, perhaps the price of silver was relatively low at that time and made such counterfeits were more profitable than previously.

Re: Is this a O Die Defect? Similar to 23 P 1AN

It looks 3-dimensional to me (i.e. something on the surface of the coin).

Do you have an ultrasonic cleaner? If so, give it a ride in an ammonia/dish soap mix.

It has to go somewhere, and the path of least resistance is apparently into the die. This would be a good Dan Carr (@dcarr) demo to reproduce this effect.
Aren't the dies annealed prior to being struck by the hub? Then hardened?
