1883-O VAM 64

Appears VAM 64 is a duplicate of VAM 8 or 8A. The 8 is actually a later die state of the 8A as far as I have found, where the gouges beneath star fade away.

Re: photos of 1883-O VAM-28

The VAM 28 was only listed as doubled 3. So this could certainly be listed as VAM 28. I originally had this listed as 37 very early in the die study due to very slight doubling on top of 3. I changed it to Q1(my first Questioned die) after JR returned without designation and when I saw a good pictur...

Re: photos of 1883-O V-18

This is the same Die Pair as VAM 1J. You can see the cud forming below date. The obverse was used previously in VAM 1C2. The key I use for reverse is a a raised beveld area above the second s in states which progresses clockwise to "o" in "of" with die use. I suppose feed fingers caused this and wha...

I have this as VAM 14.

VAM 46 was listed only as Doubled 1.

Re: 1883-O ?

I have more to say about the others, but you are on the right track. The overlapping reeds is a mess, the 58 has an earlier die state that does not have full cud’s but certainly is the same die pair, the overlapped reeding rotates around the coin, I have three rotated positions but all with same spa...

Re: 1883-O ?

Every coin with this reverse I have found including an older ANACS AOH 48 has had the scratch in the cotton bolls that is associated with VAM 9. I would have bought the 48 but the guy thought it was worth a fortune. I think many early listings were looking at big bold pups, depending on series and i...

Re: Trouble placing an 1883-O

We were both surprised with a VAM-1 also. If there is truly letter transfer in the hair from we trust it would get listed differently. Just not sure if it is there though. The gouge in the base of T in Liberty is the other pup.

Re: Trouble placing an 1883-O

Well that appears to be the same die pair that Nate sent in a few years ago and LVA called it VAM-1. I thought those pictures and notes were on the VAM 1 page, maybe someone took them off thinking that it was not important information or maybe I’m just mistaken on what was there.

Nice pics though.

Re: Die Adjustment Strike ?

See if this diagonal line where it connects to vertical line in upper left side of Y you can see in your coin. The 1J shares the obverse with 1C2. the lines get pretty mushy in the 1J. Also check reverse under second S in STATES for beveling of field. Can be seen on most 1J’s. It’s interesting as yo...

Re: Die Adjustment Strike ?

Would be nice if that was a 22 before clashing, Ive never seen one. The mm in the coin pictured appears to me to be slightly higher than the 22. I have several examples of the die pair used in 1J that exhibit the same weakness on obverse and reverse of the coin pictured except the weakness in eagles...

Well the map of 1866 in LOC, 2 years after statehood, shows the name to be Carson City.

Re: Question to ponder

Used in a sentence “ The City of Carson, Nevada”....

Carson City is what we are used to. Language from the past is much different than the grammar that is common these days that I am certainly guilty of.

Harry, I think the top feather just got trimmed a bit close.

Hopefully the last picture will nail it for some.

Re: VAM This

Alan, Good question. I think it’s a C3. Been polished a bit. Whoever cut this did a pretty careful job. Of course my lighting blows up right on sweet spot, it is smooth all the way down from top of berry. Don’t see the ledge with C4/C3
