I think one would need a VAM 15 in hand attributed by ANACS since you have been around to say it has the same obverse as VAM 38. Does this look like date is Slanted?

Dave was a kind soul. I first met him in person at a show after I had just purchased an 83-O DMPL and he happened to walk up during the purchase and noticed the date and then introduced himself and asked if I was who he thought.

If the chip, broken punch, ( not doubling) in 3 does not match a listed VAM it is a different obverse Die. This appears on several of the 83-O Vam 58 die pair and on coins that did not appear to be a full strike. I wonder if this would suggest a planchet issue during the use of this die pair? This is a left side of normal slanted date that has what appears to be over polishing or a gouge.

Yes this does appear to be a VAM 12. The dot is hard to see on your picture of obverse. This VAM does not have a lot to go by.
