Re: 1900-O Vam 29 attribution and value

Unfortunately, it is not a VAM 29 or a VAM 29A. It is the evil mimic, either a VAM 35 or VAM 35A depending on whether a clashed 'n' is present for the 35A. The VAM 29 and 29A are normal dates and yours is a near date. The VAM 29A die break goes into the denticles at the neck point and yours goes pas...

Re: OT: Leroy, Marilyn and a burl bowl - a tribute to multiple beautiful lives

Thank you for sharing, but most of all caring. Your article about your interactions with Leroy that went beyond VAMming was just what I needed to read to start this holiday season. I'm not sure why, but in my experience people who are willing to spend their time researching and learning about what i...

Re: Meet your new Official Attributors

I have no doubt that new attributions going into the future will workout fine. Leroy told me a number of years ago about the sheer number of all his existing print photographs and how he never had the time to search through them or digitize them. Perhaps now that Dr. Fey is the owner, a new wealth o...

Re: New VAM-e Sent - Michael Fey Buys LVA Assets

Thank you, Leroy Van Allen, for all the lifetime of work and effort put into your most excellent hobby.

Corresponding and sharing Morgan Dollar varieties with you over the last decade was an educational delight and one of my distinct pleasures. Your letters will be missed.

Re: SEGS results

Very nice and rare example. If I remember correctly, we saw an ICG graded 58 example posted here a few years back too.

So some escaped the tumbler. Most are heavily circulated and only grade G or VG.

Re: Newbie Question - May not be VAM Related

Yes, the fact that there is no damage around the mintmark makes me think it was struck through grease or some other small foreign object in the mintmark on the die.

1896-O oval O mystery coin

I ran across this 1896-O coin on eBay. I didn't win the auction, but it is a strange looking coin. Posting here for discussion and opinion. What caught my attention was the apparent oval O mintmark. The 1896-O VAM 8 oval O has never been seen since it's initial listing and is rumored not to exist. T...

Re: Fresh Back From LVA on 1881-O VAM 1L

Wow, what an intriguing piece of detective work. Denticle impressions have always fascinated me as the artifacts seem to be the result of sloppy work in the press room. I always wonder if the press men said "Oops", kept quiet, faced disciplinary action from superiors or didn't notice the end results...

Re: Date on PCI Slab?

I picked up this coin on eBay in 2009. Note the mistaken nomenclature on the label as a 7 TF which is why I bought it as a curiosity piece. I didn't know who Brian Raines was when I bought it. But since it is signed by Brian Raines, (who attributed and graded for PCI for a while) he may be the go to...

I am able to log in and post using Firefox version 91.0 (64 bit). It is the latest version that they updated a couple of days ago. You could try an update check by clicking on help and about Firefox. It will tell you if you have the latest version. You can also try clearing your cache and Vamworld c...

Re: USPS PCGS lost package

I had one mis-delivered coin last week. Fortunately, my neighbor got it and returned it to me. That makes 5 mis-deliveries for coins in the last couple of years. I never recovered two of them. I get other peoples regular mail delivered to me all time. So much so that I've actually met some of them m...

Re: 1900O, Could it be the new vam?

Congratulations. You are now on the way to becoming a successful VAMmer.

Leroy doesn't list everything seen on a coin. A VAM by definition is a die classification, so multiple dies of the same VAM may exist. This concept is difficult at times to reconcile with a coin in hand.

Re: 1900O, Could it be the new vam?

Yes, your photo's now show sufficient information to attribute this VAM with the tools available on VAMWorld. In fact, your photos are pretty good and show some attributes not seen in VAMworld photos before. As soon as you identify the VAM, I'll post them to the page. No one is being cagey with you,...

Re: 1900,another O/CC LOW so different.

The VAM-7 and the VAM-10 share the same reverse die, so that's not the difference between the two. As dies wear from use, as well as with coin wear, they can appear differently. To attribute properly, you need to look at the obverse of your coin and determine the position of the left hand edge of th...

Re: any ideas???

I think this coin may have more significance than apparent at first glance. William Jennings Bryan gave his stirring "Cross of Gold" speech at the Democratic National Convention in July of 1896 and was an advocate of "Free Silver" or bi-metallism, a populist position opposed to the gold standard. Je...
