Re: I may have met my match (21-P VAM 1)

That sure looks like a VAM 29A from here. Check the collar. OMG Tom... that's it! Thank you!! The coin is in a newer yellow ANACS holder, so there's no exposed clear view of the reeds, but they sure looked spaced out from what I can see through the plastic. 6107745 reeds.jpg The crack above ONE has...

Re: I may have met my match (21-P VAM 1)

Dennis by default it cannot be a V1 with doubled right and left stars, so just step and think about the star doubling and there position on the coin, if all doubling is towards the rim than its not a VAM-1, if the doubling on both sets of stars are on the left or on the right than its strike doubli...

Re: I may have met my match (21-P VAM 1)

Are you sure the top of the cap isn't machine doubling? This is one you're going to have to hang on to until you find a PL that has the same gouge in the wing. Thanks John. The answer is it might be. BUS also shows some minor doubling (?), but all of it is less overt than I'm experienced at being a...

I may have met my match (21-P VAM 1)

I've owned hundreds of Mint State D1 reverse 1921-Ps over the years, and until yesterday I had never identified a single one as VAM 1. I've even taken several coins that grading services had called VAM 1 and found their actual VAM number. I'm actually of the opinion that VAM 1 may not actually exist...

John's talking about the 2017 version with two volumes. Pretty much every thing from the 1992 edition carried over with enough material to fill another volume that's just as big

Wow. Two volumes that big? That's got to be 8-10 pounds of books.

My copy is the original 1992 edition. The issue price was $100; I seem to recall paying $50.

OT: guess the Buffalo grade (revealed!)

Seller's pixs were too small, so this is all I have to work with. It's in a straight graded holder, so don't be imagining stuff. ;)

Re: 1921-P VAM 48 photo

Aw shucks... Thanks very much. What I use and do is not elegant and I suspect messydesk will chuckle at me, but here it is: – I use a Nikon D7100 DSLR camera on a very sturdy Bencher copy stand. Each photo's image size is 6000 x 4000 pixels. (Newer Nikons go up to 8,288 x 5,520). – I use a 60mm f2.8...

1921-P VAM 48 photo

I just got another one of these, and while taking photos of the very cool gouge through the bow, I noticed there's more to it than meets the eye. It actually goes up well into the lower tailfeathers. Plus, there's a second smaller gouge/polishing line on the left of the bow, and there are several ev...
