Re: 1892-S VAM-8 Die Pair 1 and Die Pair 2

Congrats Alan!

I looked for years trying to find a doubled hair. The only one I came across was a non-PCGS AU55. In addition to being quite expensive, I didn't agree with the grade... so I let it go. :(

And now I'm no longer interested in acquiring one.

Not a VAM-7 - I am thinking this is "strike tripling" rather than a true triple die.
That's pretty sweet!
Does anything else on the coin have that effect?

Hey Dennis,

I have an example that matches these features, and I've filed it under VAM 1BE. I think that's accurate.

Yep, that's it!
Thank you very much!

Need 1921-P help before going to LVA (solved!)

This coin has plenty of scribbles to be identifiable, but I've been through both the VAMworld and Crae's scribbles guide multiple times with no luck. I'd like others to take a look before I send it to LVA. Thanks in advance for any thoughts/suggestions. -- D1 reverse -- decent scribbles -- no cracks...

Re: WWYD? Keep or Return?

Return it! If you want an AU55 VAM 5, why not get a certified one? Here are some prices this year (keep in mind that all coins labeled as 'weak' are VAM 5): 1882-O/S 5 55 PCGS Apr-21 E $120 1882-O/S 5 55 PCGS Jun-21 E $118 1882-O/S 5 55 NGC Jul-21 E $110 1882-O/S 5 55 NGC May-21 E $105 1882-O/S 5 5...

a new 1921-P D1 I think

Has anyone seen this line under the date before? I've been through both the scribbles guide and the die crack guide 3 times, but with no success. I also checked Crae's scribbles book. But before I send it to LVA I wanted to get some more eyes on it. -- no cracks anywhere -- doubled date -- doubled l...

Re: A gift, a ‘pick, a TRU_T

Larry: The answer to "which one is the more rare to find?" is simple. It's the 1A1, because all of the letters in TRUST being present makes it easy to overlook. The SSDC registration total for 1A1 is 17, versus 39 for 1A2 – a difference that is actually a lot smaller than I would have guessed. But "...

A gift, a ‘pick, a TRU_T

The call came from a friend here on the boards: “Are you interested in a 1921-D TRU_T? An unattributed 63 just went up on eBay.” “Well of course. But aren’t you?” “I’ve bought a couple of coins lately, so I need to slow down for a while.” I found the listing quickly. I had worked with the seller bef...

Re: NGC VAM price less than non VAM?? REALLY

NGC, like everyone else, is allowed to make whatever VAM value guesses it wants. But don't assume those guesses are the same as market reality, or there is significant demand for a particular VAM.

Re: 1888 P Morgan with VAM-1B...and more?

I was told that PCGS will not do the work for me and that I have to find all of the VAM myself. Okay, what in H*ll am I paying for? Should I grade the coin as well? You were told correctly; PCGS does not make VAM attributions, you have to tell them what it is on the submission form. What we pay for...

Re: 1888 P Morgan with VAM-1B...and more?

Most already known VAMs have small features on them that aren't listed, and some have MANY things that aren't listed.
Everything you show is the normal clashing I would expect to see on VAM 1B... which was listed because it is clashed.

Re: Coin prices

Morgan prices have been on a tear pretty much all year long, especially for common and slightly better dates in modest Mint State grades. Some dates, like 1921-D, have gone berserk on a percentage basis. It's as though the definition of "cheap" has been increased up by 50% or more. I can't make any ...

To be clear here, the original post was asking if this thing had any chance of being a contemporary counterfeit

But John, the original post does not contain the word "contemporary".

Re: 1921-P VAM kill

For now, I will move 1BP to 1BN2 in the Registry. He did say it was the later state with breaks (which are generally listable). Yes he did say it's a later die state. But he didn't say anything about making a new listing. And hasn't he always been very clear that cracks don't constitute a VAM? And ...

Coin and holder look totally OK to me.
If you contact PCGS about the database issue they're going to want you to mail in the coin.
