Re: Need Help with 1921, broken E Obv

Interesting!!

I hesitate to say the coin isn't real. But it is very odd that metal flow lines appear to extend into the area where the missing part of the E is.

I'd like to hear what @messydesk and @vampicker have to say about this.

yet another PCGS "oops"

Holder errors are fun. Most can be understood to some degree, like when 1883 gets keyed in as 1888, or one of the digits in the serial number prefix is typed in slightly wrong, or a mint mark gets overlooked. But this holder error is ridiculous: small 35884604 obv.jpg small 35884604 LFCP obv.jpg The...

Great find!
In all my years of looking I've only encountered one, a cleaned XF/AU that I left for someone else to take home.

Re: F/u on JB's 91-O 1A2 purchase...

That's the coin. But just to clarify...
The coin was identified by PCGS and advertised by Heritage as a VAM 1A (1A1), which the SSDC value guide lists at $400, so John did some sharp cherrypicking on this coin.

DHalliday, Fine photos, great reference material. Is it permitted, and if so, how, may one save those images to home computer?

Go to the 1895-S master page. There's now a link for "scribbles". Large individual photos of each coin are there.

1-pix 1895-S scribbles guide

There are 8 different 1895-S VAMs. I lack VAM 6, so the VAM 6A photo below has to do double duty for it. Just imagine the scribbles/polishing lines being bolder, since VAM 6 is an earlier die state. (I wish our posting system allowed bigger photos to be shown, but you'll just have to increase the sc...

I believe your coin may be a VAM 1BH (things get more difficult to identify as the grade goes down):

Re: 1921-P First known Example Vam 110.

Having a D1 reverse will make identifying your coin much easier, since there are only about 1/3 as many D1 VAMs as there are D2s.

Re: 1921-P First known Example Vam 110.

The raised lines in and around the recesses on either side of the eagle's right leg (viewer's left) are mint-created "scribbles" that were done by hand to fill in the voids. Because no two are alike, they are effectively a "fingerprint" that identifies each 1921-P VAM (and well as 1921-D, 1921-S, an...

why doesn't PCGS care?

Accuracy. Reliability. Consistency. Confidence. Trust. Reputation. Attributing VAMs is a risky business. Some are painfully subtle, which is why the more different VAMs a grading company tries to identify, the more chances there are it will get some wrong. And when it does, the errors are right ther...
