Re: Another "re-identified" VAM - 1921 VAM 3FS "Discovery" now listed as VAM3ED???

The shear numbers of 21 vams is super crazy and lends to much confusion along the
way
The goal of the VAM system is to number and catalog every known die variety by date and mint mark.

Re: Help with 1882 S Gouge in "D"

I cant tell if it is raised or sunken but if I were forced to pick one, I want to say raised.
Look sunken or recessed to me.
There is zero indication on out side of D, it is completely retained inside the D if that helps
Struck-thru is unique and can be any shape, size, etc.

Re: Again, I find I need some help w/1879-S

I agreed with Juan. Very hard to tell.
At first my thoughts was V44, but no sign of polishing line inside the L.

Could be V79 based on the mm and engraved leave (btw, not acid treated imo).

Re: Possible new finds

You said "known mintmark styles". Even if this is a known mintmark style, it tells me three things... 1. No one has investigated why the S is so misshapen. 2. No one has found a coin that shows why it is misshapen. 3. There is a common belief that things like this can't happen. No one is questionin...

Re: Collar Clash

I don't know how many times the mint worker do adjustment on the press machine. But with an average of 200k coins struck per die pair, the answer is yes.

Re: Possible new finds

Maybe it's a 5 and a small u.
I highly doubt the mint possessed a tiny "5" and a "u" shaped die stamps; then stamped them into the working die to create that S mintmark.

Re: Collar Clash

Then what is it called when the denticles are called when they are mashed 1/2 way in a semicircular fashion?
Imo, that's an error due to ejection impact or die slide when the coin was ejected right after struck.
