Looks like you might have an unlisted pair. Is there a letter transferred?

Why peace dollar has low relief? Here is an interesting article that might provide explanation.

Re: 1879-S VAM-78 and VAM-94 related?

JR, you are correct. I should clarify what I meant by saying left over. What I think was that after using the dies (VAM-1E for obverse and VAM-78 for reverse) the Mint probably put them aside for awhile. Then later rebasin the obverse die and reworked the reverse die which now has been rusted and pa...

Re: 1879-S VAM-78 and VAM-94 related?

Thanks for the confirmation, Brian. That makes VAM-94 very interesting since both the obverse and reverse die are left over from another pairing. Reworked and reuse for making the v94. The question is why. Did the mint ran out of dies? Was v94 one of the last 79s in production or maybe was the last?...

I forgot which VAM this is, but they all seems to have that look. Very similar to what happened to 83o v22a and 1900p v24.

Here is why I think they shared reverse die. Re: 1882-S VAM-36A/37A die chip wing tip

Thank you for the respond, but I'm more confused now. On my coin, the obverse clearly shows a vertical die scratch above top right of I in LIBERTY. And the Phrygian cap is slightly doubled at top edge. This coin has to be VAM-36 obverse die. The reverse has the tiny die chip at top of right wing. No...

Re: 1882-S VAM-36A/37A die chip wing tip

Chris, I know what you meant, LOL. Let's tackle this one by one. My coin has this die chip on the wing tip. But the Obverse is a dead match to v36/36a. Could you or someone please double check if this die chip is in fact on your v37a coin? http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/w/im...

Also, on VAM-36 page, there is plate photo showing polishing lines by NIT. I think based on description, this plate photo belongs to VAM-37A.

1882-S VAM-36A/37A die chip wing tip

One of the photo on VAM-37A shows die chip at end of right wing. Well, my coin has that, but I'm pretty sure mine is v36A. So is this reverse photo with die chip wing tip shown on VAM-37A should be for 36A? Or ?

Hi Brent - no it is not vam-112.

Looks like S/S? But doesn't look like v11, 12, 21, 37 either.
Also I don't recognize the diagonal die scratches over tail feather.

Re: Exploring the theories of "Orange Peel"...

In reading the Background portion from Roger’s post; for circulation coinage (not proof coin). In my opinion, it sort of offer explanations for the overbuffed or halo effect. We know that not all dies were made perfect back then and some has metal impurities. Using 1881-O VAM-16 as an example. Follo...

Re: 1882-s vam 39a? Dbld arrow shafts?

I'm pretty sure it is 39A. I don't have one yet so I can't tell you if the arrow shaft an actual doubled or just lighting effect.

I do however, found another 82S that looks very similar to 39A. It is on my Leroy's box ready to be ship when he's ready to accept submittals.

Yes it is a bit confusing. After you entered the promo code, you need to click the "Hide Promo" button.
No clue as to why they call the button that way.
