Re: Name that crack game
I don't know about the crack, but, unless photographic trickery is in play, the doubling associated notching on the E is about the most pronounced that I have seen. I expect this VAM to be attributed on that basis.

Re: Have a Laugh at My Expense
After market inks? Denatured alcohol because that's what I have on the shelf. I routinely refill Epson aftermarket cartridges. I refuse to wear gloves as a means to make me pay.

I am a silver dollar collector who is saddened by the passing of a historian who so closely shared my interests. I hope that her enthusiasm lives on in the lives of those who knew her and that the light of history shall not dim.

Re: RMG1883CC
Thank you Jon, Dave, Mike, and others. Ron devoted much of his last decade to VAMming. He found great satisfaction in collecting the Morgan silver dollar. He brought much enthusiasm to the table. He was infectious in this regard. Loren Addendum: Ron's sister, Laurie, replied to me that Ron was not r...

Re: RMG1883CC
Reflections of Ron as I knew him. Ron was exceptional. He was known for riding the rear wheel of a motorcycle for blocks at a time. He was known for pitching a no hitter. In fact, he was recruited into major league baseball. Kansas City I think. Ron married his childhood affection; Linda. As it beca...

Re: 1921-P VAM-32A Rectangles at Base of Denticular Clefts?
Looks as if the denticles were cut too deeply. Each raised tooth is really a cut into the die. If the cut is too deep it could interfere with rim formation next to the collar. Suggests haste in doing the work....common enough in 1921 Morgans. Thank you. I have always been a bit fuzzy about the dent...

1921-P VAM-32A Rectangles at Base of Denticular Clefts?
Would someone please explain/conjecture about what caused the rectangles at the base of the denticular clefts that are located below the date. Are these of the die, the collar, or maybe the optics? 1921-P VAM-32A I3R5 AW030720 Click on the photograph to view at high resolution. http://www.silverdye....

Great incremental work. Certainly a powerful addition to the Morgan database. Nice work with the tabular layouts for 7, 12, and 14. I wonder if there might be a home for some UHRLFCPs somewhere. Loren

Re: 1883-O Right Wing Tips: Strike vs. Polish vs. FFG (VAM-4)
Thank you for commenting. Interesting that the letter cited above might have been inspired by someone's signature work. Also, I did not know about using lime at the San Francisco mint. Perhaps this explains why the most photogenic, and affordable, Morgan dollars tend to be from the San Francisco Min...

Re: 1883-O Right Wing Tips: Strike vs. Polish vs. FFG (VAM-4)
(The work cold be done with an emery wheel or a horizontal lathe in the machine shop. I don't know which was in use at NO in that year. The irregularities imply a emery wheel was used - machinists would be sensitive to misalignment, etc.) Thank you so much for commenting. You might have noticed tha...

Re: 1883-O Right Wing Tips: Strike vs. Polish vs. FFG (VAM-4)
Do the coins share the same reverse die? For the most part; no. Here are more examples. Include VAM-12 in this library. The only shared reverses that I currently know about are VAM-22A and VAM-36A. Notice that the VAM-52A has both wing tips involved. 1883-O VNC-09 I2R4 LAE730480. Click on the photo...

1883-O Right Wing Tips: Strike vs. Polish vs. FFG (VAM-4)
Approximately 20 percent of the 1883-O varieties appear to have a "polished" right wing tip. For example, VAM-4 . Is this appearance due to polishing, strike, alignment, feed finger gouge, or something else? Thank you for commenting. 1883-O VNC-4 TF868724. Click on the photograph to view at full res...

Re: just won this 80 p
Nice coin. If that is a cut wreath stem clash I see at the folded wheat leaf, it does not go with the wing clash at the jaw line. I would like to have a copy of that coin in hand. Nice.
