Re: just won this 80 p

Nice coin. If that is a cut wreath stem clash I see at the folded wheat leaf, it does not go with the wing clash at the jaw line. I would like to have a copy of that coin in hand. Nice.

Re: 1880P Question

In general, there is polishing of the lower hair and designer's initial for the second coin posted. But, the second coin appears to be an earlier minting than the coin of the original post. If I have the order of minting correct; state and stage are out of play. Thus, not only different coins; but a...

Re: 1880P Question

it looks like the date is doubled on the bottom of all 4 numbers. You might be observing what has been called stretch toning. During the life of the die, the date may "migrate" as the die wears (sinks). The properties of the metal on the rim side of the date may change in a way to alter toning in t...

Re: Improving understanding of partial collar errors

Excellent. Thanks. In my limited knowledge of minting; I expected the planchet, if stuck in the collar, to strike the lower die rather than the lower die strike the planchet. I thought the lower die was stationary. Someone should write a book.

Re: Was suggested to post here

@LorenAlbert Thanks and what is "giving up weight"? Funny, after I wrote that; I headed to Google and Duck Duck Go to assess just how esoteric "giving up weight" might be. We are in the midst of an obesity epidemic. Thus, weight loss dominates the search results. I have squandered much of my life i...

Re: Was suggested to post here

This might have been amenable to a poll. I am not used to the lighting trickery of scanners. The sharpness of the borders, it seems to me, preclude struck-through for grease. I doubt PMD because I see no evidence of roll up. I am betting on debris. But I am not giving up weight.

Clashed_dies
You have indicated what is called a clashed cap-V. This happens when a blank (planchet) is not in place as the dies approximate. This is a common clash mark seen across most of the MM/YR for the Morgan.

Re: 1887/6 questions

Thank you for such a quick response. I am recently retired and have just started going through them in order to pass them on to kids and grandkids. Want to categorize them if possible when I find certain anomalies so if they get the bug they can gather more information if any. That is a great plan....

Re: Copyright Question about Variety subheadings

Loren, if you want the legal jargon for copyright or patent let me know and I’ll see if my wife can send me a link from Westlaw. Westlaw is the go to legal software product used by many law firm’s across the United States and 60 countries. It’s 40,000 strong databases contain case law, statues and ...

Re: Copyright Question about Variety subheadings

To me, this is interesting. All I did was suggest that Loren check with Leroy. I generally have provided Leroy that courtesy in the past. I am amazed that this thread had dived into a legal discussion of copyright. Common courtesy was my intention, not necessarily a legal interpretation on my part....

Re: Copyright Question about Variety subheadings

It seems the legal advice being given on this site is unequivocal... And worth every penny you pay for it. What puzzles me most about this thread is not the legal ramifications. Except for a couple of early posts, I am bewildered by the lack of encouraging comment by those I view as closest to LVA....

Re: Copyright Question about Variety subheadings

It seems the legal advice being given on this site is unequivocal. So I stand corrected apparently. Has anyone here or those offering legal advice seen Leroy's agreement with Collector's Universe? I have not seen the agreement. I don't think that it is clear, as you posted earlier, that LVA has the...

LorenAlbert I am a machinist. And yes I do sort all bolts as you suggested. I look forward telling my friends how granular I am. I can imagine the looks on their faces. I happen to have recently sorted machine bolts into an organizer. You need to make decisions how to label the drawers. Those decis...
