Re: 81-O February Examination of VAMs 30, 37, 37A, 37B, and 59
Oh, now that's cool! A little GEM indeed. I was convinced they were the same too, and I see VAM-1H and VAM-40's all the time on the bay. But I've never acquired more than the one Lioncutter sold me about a year ago, 'cause it's pretty common and I already have one. Mine's in an older ANACS MS64 whic...

Re: 81-O February Examination of VAMs 30, 37, 37A, 37B, and 59
Most certainly. The month of March has thrown curve balls at everyone and their plans. I hope all is well with the family there! Wow, I never even considered the 1H crack through the end of the nose. I have my 1H handy and was able to compare. In my case I can say that, although they look really sim...

Re: 81-O February Examination of VAMs 30, 37, 37A, 37B, and 59
Just read the Feb issue of The 1881-O, and really enjoy the way HawkeEye performs these Analyses with a level head and clear methodology. Just a few months back I ran across a VAM-37A, and weeks later a coin that I thought would be a VAM-37. But I could clearly see it was once a 37A, with most of of...

Re: Cleaning or Residue?
Thanks guys. Weeks ago I had let it soak in Acetone for a day, but maybe longer will make a difference. Mineral Spirits sounds scary for some reason. Acetone is almost universally accepted as harmless, but maybe a little harm is necessary here. For some reason the source or cause of this "stuff" is ...

Re: Cleaning or Residue?
Thanks for the help! Yeah, I did for the first time ever. Wearing vinyl gloves, holding it by the edges, I dipped it in for 2 seconds and removed it quickly and held it under the faucet (hottest water I could handle) to rinse. "Bonded into the coin" - bummer :(. I'm pretty sure it's a new variety an...

Cleaning or Residue?
I'm hoping to get a little help with a "cleaned" Morgan here. It's a less common year with some interesting features that made me take a chance. I've run into a challenge taking photos of attributes to ask for VAMming advice on the board here. The reverse looks to have some contaminants, residue or ...

Re: 1883-o - Bevelled Tail Feathers ?
You can also search VW for the word "beveled", and you'll be able to see a very large number of examples.

Re: 1883-o - Bevelled Tail Feathers ?
Yes, those are beveled TF. Capturing the over polishing in a photo might be a little tricky, but note that the listing comment states "Latest die state showing full beveled field under tail feathers." The more important factor is the clashed 't'. I assume you can see that on the obverse. If so, then...

Re: 1881-S VAM-42A vs. VAM-57
They certainly look like unintentional duplicates to me. And I would be in favor of cleaning up the database for sure!
If the older discovery is not a list coin or famous for some other reason, it would seem like the earliest discovery should be spared the kill.

Re: Is 1900-O v44 really v2A?
Thanks for contributing to the 44=2A post! And especially the neat Nathaniel Mailliard (Metalencephalon) story. I see his contributions on VAMWorld a lot! fwiw - I finally got my 2A2 last Friday. Swing and a miss several times, but this makes three 2A1's and one 2A2. The 2A2 is slabbed MS64 from the...

Re: Another 1900-O duplicate (imo)
Ah! Thanks for the helpful reply. I also noticed the date and crack in the lower hair-vee, but kept quiet as my rambling was already long enough :) What still gets me a bit, is the date placement of 21B (and 40A I guess?) - the placement is near, but with a slant, and the '1' maybe being a little lo...

Re: Another 1900-O duplicate (imo)
Thanks for the response Bigbub! May I ask (other than the text in the classification) what distinguishes the two VAMs from each other? The LFCP and die markers seem to indicate they are the same Obv and Rev die. Why isn't that the lock it seems to be from the side by side photo comparisons of 21 and...

Re: Overlapping reeds?
Just finished a refresher on flutes and denticles rolling right into reeding. Understanding all the details around the tools and methods used to create the collar dies over the years explains a lot. I'll be paying more attention to those little 5 mil ridges in the future. Thanks for the tip Roger. A...

Thanks for the references RogerB! I do have that book, and am even more interested in reading about reeding now

Re: Another 1900-O duplicate (imo)
Thanks for weighing in Chief. Yeah, I know how coin in hand makes all the difference. Especially since doubling in the inside of ear or the polishing lines need to be viewed at an angle with lighting angles varied and all. My coin has every marker on both coins, most significantly, the ear doubling ...

Another 1900-O duplicate (imo)
After a limited response to the VAM44 = VAM-2A duplicate query, I'm a bit reluctant to suggest this one, but what the hey... Check out the VAM-40 and then review VAM-21 in the 1900-O series. I added a comment to the v40 page: "Looks like a duplicate of 1900-O VAM-21. Check polishing lines in tail fe...

Re: SALES TAX
Yup. I've been griping and cursing since January 2 this year (I didn't waste any time breaking my New Year's resolution to exercise more restraint with Morgans on the bay). https://taxfoundation.org/state-remote-sales-tax-collection-wayfair/ A side effect is that eBay will have to refund you the tax...

Re: Overlapping reeds?
Thanks Guys! Yeah, I was looking in the recessed areas. The extra ridge in the middle area of the recess is so strong and pronounced I think it reminded my of the left photo in Roger's 84O v21A . But I can see how the ridge in the middle is taller there, and modulates/shifts in position. Chris - you...

Overlapping reeds?
Is this overlapping reeding? I've got a 1900-O with reeds shown below, it doesn't match VAM-50 (date, markers or reeding). Here's a sequence of 12 photos, starting at 6 o'clock, rotating the coin counter clockwise. 6;00-to-8;10s_Gildy.jpg 9;15-to-11;30s_Gildy.jpg 12;30-to-2;45s_Gildy.jpg 3;50-to-6;0...

Re: 1879-p Morgan - Having trouble VAMMING this one ...
Unfortunately I don't have the time to dig in beyond the few I know very well. But I can offer a few tips / suggestions. Mark Witkower and VamPicker have studied this series very closely., so if you need the heavyweights, perhaps we can call on them. The bulge on wreath is from a clash event. The do...
