Re: 1878-S VAM 8.1 discussion

“Should I do the same for 78-S this year? 8, 36, 43, 47, 78, 86, 103 could all use makeovers in that department.”

Big undertaking; 1G, 51 & 63 are currently split, too.

Impaled eagle

Lots of interest around this supposed die variety

Later it was determined to be plain old PMD…

Re: 1878-S VAM 8.1 discussion

Obv. die was used on V28 For V8.1: 1) EDS IS 2-sided PL; die crack already exists from the neck to the denticles 2) Dies clashed; very noticeable on reverse; clash marks at both wreath sides, and clashing goes up thru 'n' yet OBV just has solid line in front of neck (no letter transfer) 3) REV die ...

Re: 1878-P 'broken N & M' obv die incest ordering?

The N and M feature is a hub break. 3 different obverse dies are involved. For one, Jeff Oxman's 7/8TF guide listed it as VAM 40, then 31 then 110. The second is VAM 145 then 162 if I remember correctly. I'd have to look at them side by side in hand to verify that however. VAM 200 was the only use ...

1878-S VAM 1B observations

So, VAM 1B appears to have a few different t die states; the EDS is essentially unpitted with very visible lines at the leg / wing gap. Later the reverse die got pitted. The official listing states the reed count is different between the early die state and the pitted version. However, it appears to...

Re: M Barr Coins

I’m leaning towards the mark being on the coin, but, it’s hard to be sure. No glam photo from the slabbing service either. ☹️ They do offer a 30-day return policy, though. 🙂 I have never tried to ask this seller a question, but it’s frustrating when you don’t get a response.
