Re: 1878cc v9 grade

The cheek would have a shot at 63 if it weren’t for the solid hit to the left of the chin. So solid 62.

Re: Spaghetti time here in Italy!!!!

Nice! The severity of the bag matks might give it a technical grade of MS60, on a good day you might get 61. Nonetheless, a spaghetti wings in mint state is no small feat! Congrats, I’d be happy!

Dennis: do you go to any of the shows where JR or ANACS set up? Or do you plan on seeing him anytime soon? You and I need to get together and have coffee and catch up on old times anyways. I think you’re probably the closest one to me. Everyone: Sorry I haven’t responded to any private messages, hav...

Re: ….wow….

Good news, fellas, when more thoroughly apprised of the situation, the seller refunded me and says they don’t want the coin back.... Combined with the seller not being very forthcoming about its origins, I'd watch their sales for a while. They don't need many people to keep a fake coin and be happy...

Good news, fellas, when more thoroughly apprised of the situation, the seller refunded me and says they don’t want the coin back. As such, I’d like to donate the coin to the SSDC for educational purposes. Not entirely sure how to go about doing that but I can send it to either JB or JR if that’s the...

Re: ….wow….

I reload, so I have accurate calipers and sensitive scales, will post some specs mañana if anyone wants to do a write up. I will also take some better photos, including photos of the problems I see, and key diagnostics. Overall, in hand, I suspect it won’t be an issue for any one who’s fairly adept ...

Re: ….wow….

Does not appear genuine to me. Seems counterfeiters are getting pretty specific. Well done, Mark, JB, Dennis, et all - this is a next generation counterfeit. Imagine once they start making these out of silver. Or even melted down Morgan dollars. Or artificially, giving them the appropriate bag mark...

Re: guess the grade! -- revealed

Not the same coin. The first coin shown is clearly in a cardboard flip, you can see it in both the first and second pictures — in the top right we can literally see the cardboard flip. Furthermore, in the first images, I highly doubt the obv and rev are the same coin, an issue I raised very early on...

Re: guess the grade!

The grading game is just that, a game. I send in coins for regrades all the time because people get it wrong at the grading services just like in life. In terms of a technical grade, it would be 63 with the strong mark on the face. In terms of a market grade, because it has frosty cheek luster, they...

Re: 1922-d Peace Dollar VAM 1T2

I've been looking at this one again and I was wondering if the mark around the 2 would possibly be part o a later die stage of the same 1T2 VAM or would it cause it to be a different VAM? Attached is a better view. Thank you! 1922D date.jpg All I see around the 2 is what appears to be post mint dam...

Struck thru grease. Spectacular specimens can command substantial premiums, I would say this is a pretty minor specimen. Pretty common.

For this discussion to be meaningful, the definition of "high" or "significant" premium needs to be defined.
Or not. Common sense goes a long way. I’ll buy any major die break in problem free condition for common money all day. 😉

There are only a few Peace Dollar VAMS that consistently carry a high premium.
I can think of at least a hundred or so. For instance pretty much any significant (chunky, eye visible) die break, not to mention many of the list coins.

It doesn't appear to be rotated. A coin in a holder with a tilt to the right of the obverse will result in a tilt to the left of the reverse when flipped top to bottom? Just a well worn coin, been through a lot of use.
I concur on both counts
