Re: 1889 O 1a1 or 1a2?

Thanks for both responses. That makes sense. I incorrectly interpreted "Late clashed die states show double clashed E" as including obverse clashing as well. It means what it said and no more.

Thanks!

1889 O 1a1 or 1a2?

I'm conflicted on this one. Specifically the 1889 O VAM 1a2 pictures show only a double clash, and indicate the double clash is a late die state, indicating there is a single clash version. An obvious distinction while comparing 1a1 and 1a2 is the pseudo doubling at the front of the neck from the ja...

1880 VAM 39 Wreath Gouge

I picked up a 1880-P VAM 39 with gouged wreath, but no clashes, in very nice uncirculated condition. It is not graded but should be I think 62 or 63. I think the 1a and 39 both are very interesting, while the unclashed 39 by itself is not on any list. It would get my vote for favorite VAM not on a l...

Re: 1880 O New VAM 84

Thanks very much for the help, and for catching the Error in P vs O. I should have caught that myself. Just did not pay attention to detail - was focused on copying and making files to send.

1880 O New VAM 84

I submitted several coins to LVA, one of which he has assigned as a new VAM - 1880 O VAM 84; Doubled Date, Cotton Leaves & Bolls.

Attached are his letter, marked up to eliminate unrelated and personal information, and his pictures. Also included are my full coin shots of the obverse and reverse.

Re: OT - Eagle from mint - spotty condition

I called the Mint (first sent an email and go no response) and described the mess I had. The rep checked with her supervisor and said they had no replacements available. She said they would send me a return mail label so I am not stuck with postage and insurance. I really just wanted the coins...

What are the spots? Worth trying acetone on swab?

OT - Eagle from mint - spotty condition

A bit off topic but not sure where else to go with quick question. I ordered the 2 coin reverse proof eagle set. Unfortunately the post office ran over the box with a forklift crushing the display box. I might live with that, but one of the coins has milky spots on it. It is not moisture - I opened ...

Re: Coin prices

Correction - just ran the sort to check myself, and the current sale listing population is about 85,000. Points still stand though - I agree the prices are jumping and quality is decreasing.

Re: Coin prices

Supply and Demand very much in play. A data point to consider... Over the last couple years it was normal for EBay to have 100,000 plus Morgans listed, at least in the saved search I use. Just a couple months ago this exact same search was down to low 70,000's. This change in the volume of listings ...

Re: 1880-P I'm stuck - Help or suggestions please

Thanks for suggestion. I took a closer look, and got out the better photo gear. You can see the obverse polishing around the cotton bolls and leaves, and in the hair, a little better in these pics. Still trying to figure out how to get pics as good as others do. I don't think either of those work......

Re: 1880-P I'm stuck - Help or suggestions please

Thanks for responding. The pincers on the 8 were one of the main features I hunted for, because they are strong and clear on this one.

I see no pitting in the ONE DO area, and nothing around the L in Liberty.

Thanks to all who took a minute to look and send me recommendation. I think I will break it out and send it in raw, that seems right to me since it clearly will not cross into PCGS.

Re: 1880 VAM 39a - Value and Crossover Advice Please

I appreciate the You Suck. Probably my first. Anyway, I broke out the digital camera to get better shots. The iPhone exaggerates and does not give proper example, in my opinion. Still not as sharp as I'd like but I'm still trying to figure that out. Not sure if these change any minds but I'm still t...

1880 VAM 39a - Value and Crossover Advice Please

I think this coin needs to be sent in for re-grading by an established company. I have not sent coins in for grading. I enjoy having them in flips in an album so I can easily access them and compare/examine. Just me I guess. I think this coin could grade near the top in its group. It looks a bit bet...
