Re: CAN'T FIND THIS LISTED, 1891-S/S/S?

Nice work UB. I'm curious if there's a wart on the 9 and an MPD below the 1 in the date. Wing-neck shot would be nice but otherwise, I'm out of ideas. Tonight I opened them all and no luck.

Re: CAN'T FIND THIS LISTED, 1891-S/S/S?

Oh boy. The plot thickens. Notice how the 2nd denticle gap (identified with arrow in the VAM 11 listing) "appears" different than the other three gaps in your picture. I was ready to call this a VAM 10 due to the shortened wing tip but calling it an MPD (misplaced digit) VAM is for the experts. It's...

Just to give you an idea of what a doubled MM might look like:

Re: CAN'T FIND THIS LISTED, 1891-S/S/S?

Why might it be listed under normal vs far date? Take a look at the large full coin photo's for 91-S, VAM 1C2. Do you think that is a normal date? I don't and yet its listed under normal in the obverse guide. If I can't find the VAM via the guides, I go through ALL the listings. I still think the "S...

Re: CAN'T FIND THIS LISTED, 1891-S/S/S?

I can say with certainty that you have a reverse with "High S". Date looks far but could be listed under normal. I would try to find the PuPs shown for the High S varities and go from there. GL

Re: CAN'T FIND THIS LISTED, 1891-S/S/S?

It is not an S/S/S or even an S/S. Notice the area inside the upper loop looks very much like the surrounding areas. The lower loop is approaching what might be considered a filled S. The spike anomally on the upper serif is debrise or a flaw not pertinent enough to warrant a mention as a variety. I...

B1 or B2 reverse? 2P1 is the best I can do at this point without closeups of any anomalies.

Re: Authenticity of 1891-CC Morgan

I see nothing that concerns me as to its legitimacy. Looks like a VAM 5 or 6. Hope others agree and you can enjoy your new coin.

Great work guys. I too had focused on that single lower thread and a few other areas and went thru all those D2 scribbles listings 3X with no luck. I think weth has nailed it.

Re: O/T 2023 Reverse proof Pre order

I don't have any reverse proofs in my collection so I'm anxious to get them in hand. Unfortunately I won't see them until Mrs. Santa leaves them under the tree.

Re: Merely a question

From "What is a VAM" definition page: --"Through careful study, slight differences can be used to identify specific dies that created the coins" --"To this end, every Morgan dollar in existence is either already a VAM or should be a VAM". Given what JB said, he may agree with the definition a bit mo...

Merely a question

This past weekend I picked up an 1889 Morgan. Turned out to be a VAM 53, Die #2.

If a VAM is a combination of two dies, why, when a 2nd reverse die is identified, is it not given a different VAM number? I have several where this applies.

Re: 1878s VAM-72

It is the responsibility of submitters to familiarize themselves with, and fully understand, which VAMs a grading service does and does not attribute. Period. Agreed. I didn't ask them to do squat with the attribution yet they took the time to call my attention to it and ask if I wanted it transfer...

Re: 1878s VAM-72

I recently sent several crossovers to PCGS. Within a day or two of receipt, my order was flagged as problematic and it concerned the VAMs attributed on my ANACS holders. They wanted to know if I expected the VAM attribution to be carried over to the new label should it cross. These weren't Top 100 o...
