1884-O Help?

I have an 1884-O with a rusted obverse die I can’t pin down. Reverse has oval MM, but no pitting I can see. Faint clash. Obverse is highly pitted heavily on main device. Threadlike area in lower face/hair junction. Hair and ear look funny with flattening but still with luster and no signs of wear. I...

Does 14.3 have doubling of the lips and profile?

I can see the little eye booger on Liberty's eyelid. VAM 6 it is!
Thank you. It’s the additions and subtractions to the description that get me. VAM 6 mentions nothing about LIBERTY.

Look closely at the feathers again.
It’s not a 14.16
Your photos will get you there.
Well darn. I’ll go back to the drawing board. I have 4 identical to this so far. I was sure hoping.

1878 8TF VAM 14.16??

I think I’ve got a hot lipped lady here, but want to verify. From what I saw this one is a rare one. Of this is it I may have a nice surprise for folks. But first things first is this 14.16? If I am missing key identifiers let me know and I’ll snap pics.

1878 8TF?

Is this one reverse A1D? I have it pegged as VAM 6, but LIBERTY shows doubling as well. I don’t think it’s 14.19 because the A in STATES isn’t showing the right side doubling and this one has the small eye spike. Is LIBERTY also slightly doubled in VAM6?

Messy desk is way too modest. Besides being head moderator here, he is also the current president of the Society of Silver Dollar Collectors, and is owner/operator of Variety Slabbing Service – a highly accurate and respected VAM attribution service whose attributions are even used by Heritage Auct...

Re: 1878 8TF VAM?

So far as I sit here in meetings and double task, you can guess which one is getting more attention, I’ve found the following:

VAM 18 x4
VAM 14
VAM 14.3
VAM 16

Re: 1878 8TF VAM?

One thing I've discovered personally more than once is that just because the holder says 8TF or 7TF doesn't mean the holder is right... so take a close look to make sure. Also, anything with PL surfaces demands extra careful attention, because all of the super rare 8TF VAMs seem to have been PL/DMP...

Re: 1878 8TF VAM?

So I sorted out all of the 8TF I got. I thought I had 13 from my notes. Seems he had more that I didn’t see. So based on the first one it seems the best process is to begin by identifying reverse to narrow down VAM possibilities and go from there.

Re: 1878 8TF VAM?

One last question for the group. How do you address it when there are pick ups identified that aren’t on the coin in question? Obviously it doesn’t preclude it from being that VAM. Do you have if it has some but not all it’s still that VAM?

Re: 1878 8TF VAM?

Looks like Brian (vamsterdam) misinterpreted the initial pictures when he saw them. You initial assessment of VAM 14 was actually correct. For 1878 8TF, the hand-engraved feathers under the wings are the first things we look at, and magnification is critical for these. There is so much doubling and...

Re: 1878 8TF VAM?

Here is some of the stuff I’m not seeing that steered me away from 14.3.

- Clean 8
- No extra metal at wing tip
- No lines in Liberty
- No mark in front of eye
- No polishing line at eagle leg

Re: 1878 8TF VAM?

I love your photos. I can’t ever get photos that nice. Look at your last two photos. Do you still think VAM-2 is a contender? I have a nice stereo microscope with camera that makes it easy to get decent pics. It’s sure not my photography skills. I’m actually a seasoned collector just not a Morgan g...

Welcome to VW Woodsy.
Don’t worry about being new here. Keep at it. You’ll get it.
Very nice photos. Do you have a close up of the feathers on the eagle’s left side? Right as you look at the eagle. Both sides are important.

Re: 1878 8TF VAM?

I know I am making this harder than it should be, but both VAMs have polishing lines in the pictures and description that are not present on my coin. If I had to guess, and it would be just that a guess, I would say VAM 2. But I don’t know that it is. I’ve clearly got to study up on my Morgans. I fe...
