Re: New to VAM analytics...

If you see something specific on your coin, a picture is worth a thousand words. Note, however, that the picture-to-word exchange rate doesn't necessarily scale with the number of pictures.

Re: From patterns to a VAM-9 launch - any historical info?

I flipped through Morgan's sketchbook to see if there was evidence of him wanting a specific number of tail feathers at a certain point, and there wasn't. Eight may have just looked better than seven on that iteration of the reverse die. Had they not been pressed into production when they were, the ...

Very nice denticle impression coin. I agree that it's not a High O. Thanks for bringing this up.

Time to order 2023 Calendar!

Now taking orders for my 2023 coin calendar. The price this year is $22 (includes shipping in the US), which gets you a wall calendar with a different coin photo that I've taken for each month. The calendar is printed on heavy card stock with glossy pictures of a diverse assortment of eye candy. Thi...

Re: 1921-D VAM 5C question

I'd call it VAM 5C EDS, since it's its own die pair. The description on my label would include something like, "early die stage before break in S forms." I could possibly be convinced to split it into 5C1 (Scribbles only) and 5C2 (Scribbles + break) since they're easily distinguishable and you would...

A quick, unscientific survey of submissions to me over the past year shows the Southeast being represented most often.

Re: 1878 7TF Minor Renumbering

More 7TFs have been renumbered as of tonight, affecting the 130x and 131x listings. 130A, 130B, 130C1.1 and 130C1.2 are now 135, 136, 137, and 138. 130C3 is now 137A, as it is a later stage of 130C1.1 130C2 doesn't exist. 130 is an empty nest and the number will not be reused. 131 has been split int...

Re: 1900-S VAM-3

There were only a few VAMs I still look for. Top of the list is 1900-S VAM-3A. I believe it is a listing error for a few reasons, but figure the imaged mint mark coin remains in the wild almost certainly raw. Additionally, just finding a VAM-3 has been a tall task. I have sought them for decades. ....

New 92-S Top 100

I had a new 92-S variety cross my desk. Obverse is like VAM 7, with the repunched date mostly polished away, but reverse is different. This is now listed as VAM 14 and counts as a slot in the Top 100. Alan had observed this die pair during his photo die study but the coin hadn't been seen in hand un...

Re: OT; Thanksgiving Break

I did some research in the Heritage archives: BB-168 (R4). Finest known examples are two AU50s. Here's the writeup from a 2005 Heritage auction for a PCGS-25 example, when the rating was R5: "This is a rare die variety and is in demand by specialists both for its rarity and for the horizontal die b...

Re: New Discovery

For some unknown reason my computer can't find my scanner and I can't find the disc to re-install, so can't post the letter or plate photos. But also the guidelines stated, "Coins that are found to be new varieties will be added to the Catalog without further action by the submitter". I thought thi...

Both the rim ding and the environmental damage from the fingerprint would prevent a straight grade.

Re: Cool Peace $ CUD

If only there was something like an annual short list for stuff like this... You mean like something between 10 and 15 VAMs that are cool and/or scarce that would be fun to spend the next year looking for? Sort of like a year-long scavenger hunt? Yeah, someone should do that. We could even use the ...

I had to read the description of 8.3 vs. 8.0 a couple times.... very minor vs. minor ???? Really?? Sounds almost impossible to break that down.
How about the differences between AU50 and AU53? That's what those are.

Re: NGCX

NGC's new 100 point grading scale (10 plus one decimal place) that supplements the 70 point scale and will be used on moderns at first. It's an attempt to make graded coins approachable by those that grade other collectibles graded on a scale of 1-10. To me, it's an attempt to get more grading fees,...

Holy crap! I'll repost the list on the PCGS forum. This stuff gets posted there now and then. Were they stolen from the mail or your car? Hope you get it all back.
