Re: 1878 7TF Minor Renumbering Complete

The C reverses are a project for another day. The ugliest listings, all the VAM 210s, were relatively low-hanging fruit.

Re: Printed 2022 VAM Supplement

Yes. Leroy didn't make a 2020 supplement but did a 2020-21 supplement. Shortly thereafter, Michael Fey bought all of his IP and now I have the text of that document and paste-up pages. I have to work out duplication and distribution methods for that. Leroy ran to Kinko's with a stack of papers and m...

Re: 1922 Peace Dollar Question

That's a clash from the top of Liberty's head. Quite common and not listed as a feature in the VAM catalog.

Printed 2022 VAM Supplement

As the year draws to a close, I need to figure out what to do about the annual VAM supplement. This year's will be text for only 2022 as well as pictures for 2022. I don't have the 1992-2021 text integrated into my database yet, as that's a future project. The Morgan and Peace dollars will be in the...

Re: OT Capped Bust Half Grading question

Looks like a really nice piece. The wing edges are fairly sharp, consistent with being graded AU, but there's wear on the obverse that stands out more. I can't get a good read on the surfaces or luster, so I'm going to say it is graded XF45.

Whatever was happening in Philly was being echoed in the Big Easy.
Remember that all dates were punched into dies in Philadelphia, so everyone got their share of wonky dates. 96-S has a few, too, including a misplaced date that was just listed a month ago (VAM 11).

Re: 1878 7TF Minor Renumbering

The last of the 1878 7TF renumbering has been completed. 185A, B, C, and 186A and B are now 180-184. 195A is 194. A table on the 1878 page contains a cross-reference for old and new numbers. That will be the end of the changes made for this year. I have my eyes on 1878-S next year, as VAMs like 47, ...

Re: 1896-P VAM-5A obverse scratches?

Neat Double! Part of me wishes that the initial descriptions on sort by date was more detailed, like "Extreme Doubled One", but another part really appreciates that it isn't.. it makes you hunt and learn. There's a "signal-to-noise ratio" optimization that is needed for titles and descriptions. Pre...

Near date with C3 reverse and nothing else notable is VAM 5.

Re: 1900-P near 2x date C3 rev - not seeing it described

Lips are definitely machine doubled. Magnitude and direction are similar to if not the same as the date. The date is punched into the die separately from the hubbing until 1909. Seeing similar doubling on both the date and devices of this coin help confirm that it's machine doubling. This effect isn...

Re: 1896-P VAM-5A obverse scratches?

Looks like die scratches in the cap. I imagine they are always on this die. I think I have a VAM 5 or 5A (they quite possibly are the same) somewhere. I'll have to find it and check. My inclination would be to revise the VAM 5 description to note the scratches unless I'm shown a VAM 5 without them.

The reverse die was changed between VAM 1B4c and 1B5 as far as I know, but they're both classified as D2a reverses.

Re: 1921-S Vam 1B4C (new stage) Thorn or Thornhead (new variety)

The text in previous supplements for VAM 1B4b said, "Added thin die gouge between E and D below wreath bow on later 1B4b die states." This is what was made VAM 1B4c in the interest of tracking the die changes that collectors of this high profile series are interested in.

Leroy actually mentioned it in either the 1B4b or 1B5 listing before this was listed. He had the opportunity to add it at one time, but declined, presumably since it was only a change in the reverse.

Classic quote to extend RogerB's comment about the artistic abilities of some of the players involved in our (non-darkside) hobby. It's currently listed as VAM 1H1. There used to be a VAM 1H2, but that was delisted. I would favor renumbering VAM 1H1 as VAM 1H.

Re: New to VAM analytics...

I'll start with your 34-D you labeled VAM 1. I would call this VAM 6 - small D tilted right. Use ONE as a baseline for what's horizontal and you'll see the tilt in the mint mark. Proper rotation of pictures is very helpful, if not critical, in identifying these sorts of things.
