Re: Collar Clash
Not a clash at all. A clash is when dies hit each other and cause subsequent coins to show the after-effects. Did you happen to catch the doubled stars?SilverToken wrote: ↑Thu Aug 11, 2022 12:21 pmOK
Then is it just considered a clash on the denticles, crushing them 1/2 way down?

Re: can an AU55 coin be PROOF LIKE
Light wear that results in an AU58 grade can still leave sufficient mirrors in the fields to qualify the coin for a PL designation. I haven't seen a 55PL, if the mirrors are still there, it should be graded PL.

Re: "78 8TF VAM-9A Possible new die state??
I don't see anything that would make me think to list another stage. 9A has a weak clash, 9 doesn't have a clash. Your looks like it might have a second, weaker clash, but it's not listable.

Re: Rotation
Rotation under 15° isn't considered a big deal. Other features of the coins will help with the attribution more than the rotation will.

If there's no dash under the 8 and no doubled arrows, I'd call it VAM 5.

1880-S Listing Carnage
Lots of changes to the 80-S listings, making it a little easier to attribute that date. Former 7A is 122. since it's not related to VAM 7. 45A is now VAM 124, for a similar reason. 124 has the reverse shared with some 79-S's and the obverse of VAM 63, which shares a reverse with a few others, which ...

Time for a new light
I knew I wanted a new light for my microscope for a while, and I finally got around to ordering one last night. My currently light, which has probably lasted over 10 years, caught wind of me doing this. The bulb started flickering today and then it started smelling like magic smoke. Looks like I'll ...

Re: Book - "From Mine to Mint, Vol 2"
Out in front of the ANA HQ there's a coining press. Last couple times I taught the Morgan class there, I tried to explain what moved where and how when a coin was struck. What would be neat is annotated illustrations that show the movement of a planchet through the press and what parts are moving th...

Re: Are these scratches contact or cleaning?
Impossible to be sure from the pictures, but they seem to be random, incidental lines and marks from being handled, not a coherent patch of lines from a cleaning. Tilt and turn under a single light and see if there's a patch that suddenly pops out. That's what a TPG will call out as a cleaning.

I can un-kill that one in my database, as if it were never killed. JohnR had sent me a kill list back in March, and this was on it, although tentative.

They state that they use the fair market value, not to exceed the declared value.SilverToken wrote: ↑Sun Jul 31, 2022 3:05 pmThe big elephant in the room question.....
Does PCGS through their insurance use PCGS posted values of the coin(s) that was stolen/lost to make you whole?
