Re: PCGS TrueView photos of my 1904-O VAM-35B

Nice coin! Welcome, and glad you're having fun with this little corner of the hobby! I was definitely more of a hoarder and date/mint collector for decades. It took me a while to get here, but enjoy this aspect of the hobby more than I ever have before. I appreciate that VAM hunting really refines ...

I like the clip. Stronger than many in that it actually shows the Blakesley effect quite well. Nice pick-up!

Wow, that eagle sure has a lot of upper tail feathers.
The original scribble scratches, done right, as it were.

Re: 1891-S VAM-3 Die question

i have not studied vam 3 reverses enough to prove one way or the other but could any of these be different stages of the other with a different polishing line at trust? ie-a similar polishing scratch due to a repeating phenomena? could the original polishing line have been polished off, or worn off...

Morgan newp via 3 different mints

At the ANA show, Ash managed to find and buy an original set of cancelled CC Morgan dollar dies. He later arranged to go to Dan Carr's Moonlight Mint to have a bunch of Morgan dollars overstruck with these dies. Therefore, between the CC mint, Moonlight Mint, and the mint the overstruck coins were o...

Dang a 62 .
The Denver mint had to do that one on purpose .
Watch, it'll probably be worth more than any of the others.

Re: 2021-O Polished Die?

I assume these are examples where automation of the die creation and repair produced coins of a lower quality than the handmade dies They're lower quality by design. The dies will last longer that way. The single squeeze hubbing process is basically load the machine and push a button. Downstream fr...

If they are indeed flakes that broke off the die, they would seem to have broken off before the "dead luster" was applied to the dies.

Re: 2021-O Polished Die?

If there is full detail there on others, then it would seem more likely to be a weak hubbing. It wouldn't surprise me if the dies weren't polished at all, rather simply given their uniformly bland luster after being hubbed.

Re: 1887 o vam help (Mitch vam 43?)

I don't see anything that makes me say anything but VAM 1. Date and mint mark are in the normal position and orientation, and neither have doubling that I can see. Is there any doubling on the stars, profile, eye, or ear?

Re: 1878-P VAM-8 die and machine doubling? And extra pictures for the page

The combination of a doubled die and machine doubling is best seen on the E you show above. 8TF reverses are full of doubling, and to describe it all would introduce too much noise into the description, especially on VAM 8, where there are easily identified pickups. This would make it more difficult...

Re: 2022 Proof Morgan's and Peace Dollars

The technical people have been advised of several short comings, including their "sandpaper" frosting. However, nothing is likely to change unless a new director demands it. I would bet that any engraver given the opportunity to recreate 19th century craftsmanship would jump at the chance. Pity it ...
