Re: 1878s VAM-18A

VAM 18 is usually found in XF-AU, often with problems. Uncirculated ones are much tougher. The XF-AU count is probably underrepresented in the registry because it's not on as many want lists or in as many collections as the long nocks.

Re: F/u on JB's 91-O 1A2 purchase...

There are a few issues with the price guide, and this might be one of them. AU 58 is almost the end of the line for any 91-O VAM 1A. There are a handful graded MS for all die stages combined. I wanted a 58 for my collection, Lloyd's pedigree was a bonus, as was the 1A2 stage. I think the only stage ...

Looks like an AG3, but might get a details grade given staining and damage.

Re: OT - 2007 P GW$ Elongated Third Ray

Wexler obviously wasn't sure what it was, didn't think it was a die gouge, and thought it worthy to draw attention to. There are other moderns that have fit into this category, most notably the extra leaf Wisconsin quarters. Is there a reference to Tom DeLorey's rationale for saying it's actually a ...

Re: 1-pix 1895-S scribbles guide

Thanks, Dennis, although technically these are not scribbles. Scribbles are added by hand to add detail (so far as we can tell), while these are die polishing lines. Still just as useful in determining what die they are, but decidedly different.

Damage after the mint? There is alot of flattening and gouging on the obverse but the reverse looks great.
Once it's struck, if the damage in inflicted after or by the mint doesn't really matter, and there's no way of telling. Bottom line is that the obverse has been chewed up by something.

Re: NEW R-7 Retained Cud 1921 $ with photos

I did just call this a VLDS and didn't split the listing. I don't recall my exact wording, but I think this is one I'd want to see with and without all the crack/break pattern to generate a distinct VAM stage listing Pursuant to the current guidelines for new listings, I agree. But that doesn't sub...

Re: OT - 2007 P GW$ Elongated Third Ray

It's also listed on John Wexler's site as WUFO-001. I'm unclear as to what CONECA's relationship to Variety Vista is right now. My understanding was that James Wiles was no longer adding to the CONECA master listing, but everything that had been there before this transition took place was still good...

Re: 1885-S conundrum

I'm going to guess that only 7, 7A and 2A exist, although VAM 1A could exist. Don't forget about VAM 4A, which is probably a different die pair from VAM 4.

I'm also going to guess that there's a package labeled "1885-S conundrum" on its way to me soon.

Re: 1899 O Vam 25B with clashing?

The clashing is quite light, therefore ignored with respect to the VAM 25B specification. It is visible on the full-coin photos.

Re: 1899 O VAM 30 with clashing?

Start with mint mark and date. VAM 30 has a repunched date with large spread, so that's pretty much your "one and done" feature, and I think I see it in your photos. The clashes you show are also on both full-coin pictures on the VAM 30 page. As there is no letter transfer, they aren't mentioned in ...

Re: 1887 O VAM 4 Question

Look at the top edge of the eagle's right (viewer's left) wing and you'll see a vertical line that goes up to the left edge of the G in God, then hooks into the wing. That's the clash.

Nope. Just common die cracks that will only be on later die stages. They would need to be wider die breaks in order to be added.

Re: 1881 S questions

The metal build-up on the digits is classic ejection doubling that's very common for 81-S. It also makes it harder to attribute the coins at time. The obverse is correct for VAM 38, but notice that the mint mark is in a slightly different place.
