Re: 1883-P VAM-20+ LDS Doubled date, stars, motto, LITY in LIBERTY. etc.

The mint wouldn't take a die out of service to repunch the date on it. The die was already hardened for use. Splitting a listing into multiple listings requires coins representing all potential listings to be submitted for examination. There also needs to be a clear difference between them such that...

“Should I do the same for 78-S this year? 8, 36, 43, 47, 78, 86, 103 could all use makeovers in that department.”

Big undertaking; 1G, 51 & 63 are currently split, too.
So is that a "Yes, please" vote?

Re: 1878 Morgan w/reverse of 1879 7TF

Circulated 1878 Rev of 79 can be difficult to attribute. There are three Top 100 VAMs (203, 220, 223) that are easily attributed simply by looking at or near the R in PLURIBUS. I always start here. If I don't get a match, it's probably going to take me a while, especially on a circulated coin.

Re: Lack of posting topics and overall interest

Many great points on this thread, love what Roger is saying. But I'm gonna go ahead and address the elephant in the room. The deeply embedded denigration of profit motivation is all but destroyed VAMs. Is sad but true. I can remember years ago when I was very young and came on VAMworld (2005? 2006?...

Re: 1878-S VAM 8.1 discussion

Obv. die was used on V28 For V8.1: 1) EDS IS 2-sided PL; die crack already exists from the neck to the denticles 2) Dies clashed; very noticeable on reverse; clash marks at both wreath sides, and clashing goes up thru 'n' yet OBV just has solid line in front of neck (no letter transfer) 3) REV die ...

Re: 1878-S VAM 8.1 discussion

1878 clashers are really special in my thinking, but as always i hate all the confusing die configuration stuff, as it simply adds frustrating details to a already to many PUPS venue What ever happened to SIMPLE VAMMING? IMHO Every collector is different. Newer collectors should keep it simple and ...

If you use the search terms ""1921-D" gouge bow" (1921-D must be in quotes because of the dash) you will find it.

Re: Lack of posting topics and overall interest

One of the issues is that VAMs have become sufficiently popular (all over most auction sites, Heritage has special VAM sales, everyone knows about VAMWorld) that people see them and get started without guidance. Many that come here are at first looking for quick answers and are never seen again. Thi...

Re: 1879 S VAM 29 + (the plus revealed)

Tough call on whether it's a positive or negative thing. I find the VAM more exciting than the strike-thru, so would buy it for that and the strike-thru would be a bonus, but not one I'd pay for, sort of like getting an extra cherry in my brandy old fashioned. Were this on a generic 79-S, it would b...

Re: Is there a trick to photographing overstruck coins to make the original more visible?

I have a few I see things in under microscope but can't get what I'm seeing to show up in photos, which would be hugely helpful for making overlays in photoshop to find a match. It makes me want to find someone with access to a scanning electron microscope and beg for their scan. Are there any know...

Re: 1882 1F (ish)?

There is currently a VAM 22 listed. Was what is now called VAM 1F EDS originally listed as VAM 22 before 2000? If so, what was the specification? Doubled/tripled reverse? If presented with the current 1F EDS, 1F1, 1F2 and the reverse is a doubled or tripled die, I might be inclined to renumber them ...

Re: 1882 1F (ish)?

I would call it VAM 1F EDS, title it "Normal dies" and mention the scratches below the eye and the dies not yet beign clashed. Once we know what the die pair is, there's nothing to gain by labeling it ambiguously as VAM 1.

Re: 1921 D VAM 5E & 5E+++LDS?

I don't see anything big enough here to list. At least one of those cracks would have to have something significant break off to get listed. "Displaced fields" in peripheral cracks are usually just die wear. Most should not have been listed, in my opinion.

Re: Need Contemporary Counterfeits for Pics

There are two obverse dies for 1902-O Micro Os, so those could actually be VAM 96. The 96-O and 00-O only had one obverse paired with the Micro O reverse.

Need Contemporary Counterfeits for Pics

I've been approached by Winston Zack, who is the author of the "Bad Metal" series about contemporary counterfeits. He's in need of good full-coin pictures of the following from the Micro O family for his third volume, which will include silver dollars: • 1893-O VAM 9 • 1894-O VAM VNA-B • 1896-O VAM ...

Re: 1880s I think vam24 reverse is same as vam 10

The obverse pictures on the VAM 24 page were all VAM 105, so I removed them from the VAM 24 page. I added the clear picture of the chip inside the upper loop of the 8. I may add a couple more. VAM 24 has the earliest reverse of 24, 10, and 105.
