Re: 1878 7 Tail Feathers Reverse of 78 Can Someone Help Identify? Missing lower part of Nostril and lower part below lip

One thing you need to do in addition to returning this is contact the Anti-counterfeiting Task Force . The seller will plead ignorance and refund your money and it'll seem like a one-off mistake. ACEF will keep tabs on this seller and see if they can establish intent, then law enforcement can come d...

There's no such thing as an unopened roll of 1878 Morgan dollars. I agree that it looks fake. If you bought these recently, return them.

Re: is G.C. taking over?

I would rather send coins to G.C. over Heritage. My experience with G. C. has been good. My St Gaudens 1909-S/S in PCGS MS-65 did well. I just sent in my favorite Saint into G. C. In the near future you will see a 1911-D/D PCGS MS-66 CAC with Duckor/Akers heritage on the label. :) / :( If it's a D/...

I can't comment as to how it became to be what you see without seeing a close-up picture or the coin in hand.

Re: is G.C. taking over?

I believe that GC is on the right track to taking over, and there are several things they could do to hasten the process. One, might be to find a mutually beneficial agreement with ANACS to promote VAMs, as PCGS and NGC only recognize a small percentage of all VAMs. They currently have discounted g...

Re: is G.C. taking over?

It's sort of a natural outlet for graded VAMs. Low fees for coins that aren't high enough value to send to Heritage and probably quicker payment for consignments. I think when all is said and done, the fees are close to the same as they are with eBay if you don't have a preferred seller store and th...

So can I ask a stupid question , IS that a 79? Cause it would be extra really painful on the rarity scale thingies... OH my
Yes. Large O is 1879 only. Probably a VAM 3 or 15 going from the top of my head.

Re: Dentical Impressions? Help Please :)

Referring to the first picture you posted, they might be denticle impressions, as might the other mark closer to the feathers. It may be difficult to be certain about it with a circulated coin, however.

Re: EDS vs LDS

I would call this VAM 8A EDS. VAM 8A refers to exactly one die pair, while VAM 8 may not. Referring to the coin as VAM 8A EDS removes ambiguity as to which die pair it is. It is not incorrect to call it VAM 8 LDS, but it may be ambiguous.

Re: 1898 Vam 7

Looking at the letter that explains why it was eliminated, it was determined based on examination of multiple coins that the doubling was machine doubling and not something that was on the die. If you have an 1898 with doubling on the date, show a picture here and we can try to determine if yours is...

Re: 1886P Vam 12 Dubious listing

VAMs 12 and 25 are different from each other. The doubling on the 6 is stronger on VAM 12 and the date position is slightly different. I moved it out of the "dubious" section.

Re: 1892 V 3 partial collar question

It may be a little OT, but please take a look at this coin's edge. gcs_1921-S P_rim.JPGGCS0206~2.JPG Not off-topic at all, and important for people to learn. What is shown on your 21-S is not a partial collar. Remember that the collar die constrains expansion of the coin during striking. A partial ...

Re: Archive records concerning proof coins and medals available - 1885-1889

The silver dollars started as coins that would be worth a good $10K a pop today, as did the gold dollar. If they weren't futzed with, they could have developed nice color and gone up. Of course, they could have also tarnished quickly in the humidity and been cleaned a lot. I wonder if anyone has eve...

Missed out on a couple due to the timing. 88 VAM 15 brought strong money. An 81-O VAM 16 in 62DMPL went cheap. It's underappreciated.

Re: I and R numbers

When trying to express how difficult it is to find a scarce or rare VAM, it's best to express that against the date and mint as a whole. 1878 8TF have been studied for so long that the relative rarity of each variety compared to that of a common one is very well known. That series also has enough fo...
