Re: 80 O possible duplicate listing
VAM 80 was discovered by Lawrence Lane. I'd agree they're probably the same. I'd want to see clear pictures of a coin showing markers that match both sets of Leroy's pictures.

Re: Interesting Seated Obstruction Error
I'm assuming the poster meant it went to encapsulation and did not cross. Same thing happened to me once.UNCLE BINGO wrote: ↑Fri Jan 27, 2023 2:24 amNo i understand that part , he said crossover . like it was already in plastic , I thought they returned them if they would not crossover .

Re: Interesting Seated Obstruction Error
I've had a crossover go to encapsulation and did not grade.. How does that work ? I thought if they would not cross they were returned  Encapsulation is the next step in the process after grading. If nothing in the submission is to be encapsulated, they're done immediately and forward it to Q...

I got a quick reply to my email. He said that the book is rare and out of print. I'd have to think that encapsulation means it's real, but I suppose it could mean "we're putting it in a body bag."

Re: 1885-S VAM-6 Denticle Impressions?
Just checking. If anyone has a 85-S VAM-6, can you check the reverse upper tail feathers and see if your coin has the same "dots"? They look raised to me which means they are incuse on the die, and could be spaced the same as denticles, i.e., denticle impressions. I might add they are repeatable on...

Thanks for posting this. May as well add one to your collection. They are attractive, after all.

Have the parts of the coin been weighed to confirm that the planchets involved were the right weights?

Re: 1921D 1CL or 1CL2 with die file lines
"Die File Lines" is a weird term. Sometimes they refer to aggressive die polishing, typically to remove clashes. Other times, they refer to these patches of parallel lines that are created gradually by the die being scraped by the feed fingers, such as on this coin. Whether this coin is VAM 1CL or 1...

Re: Please consider for DISCOVERY
Per new discovery guide, posting this here. 1897-S received today. The MM and date I consider within normal range. I'm fairly certain that's an unlisted eagle neck gouge and the wing-neck gap seems very unique with a heavy scratch up top. Remnents of a chip and clash on the left wreath. Lines aroun...

Re: Please consider for DISCOVERY
Thanks JB. Is that die pair study material available to me? If not, what would you do if in my shoes? VM 2.0 is all know for attributing my coins. Sending it to you is certainly an option. TIA Unfortunately, the guide is not redistributable. If you were to send it to me, I'd figure out what to call...

Re: Please consider for DISCOVERY
The bit under the eagle's jaw is a clash mark. I found a match for the reverse in a die study that Alan Scott did and based on auction and CoinFacts photos and he said it's pretty "Plain Jane," possibly VAM 1 or 3, but the thread impression you show isn't mentioned. The date might qualify for slight...

I'm not sure how many members knew him, but I was informed that long-time member Dave700x passed away last September 22. He was last active here shortly before his death and was a member on the original VAMWorld site. The news was first posted on a CCF thread last week.

Similar to the damaged denticles on the 87-S VAM 2A. Not exactly sure how that would happen, though.

Re: 1878 VAM 114A Questions
Nostril seems right. U in UNITED is just damage. Lots of doubling and tripling on 1878 obverses. Not everything is called out in the specification for these VAMs, otherwise they'd become unnecessarily long.
