Re: Do you see what I see?
Another difference, though subtle, is the thickness of the S at the top and bottom crossovers. Normal side up has the thinner crossover at the top. Of course doesn't matter on many of those mushy MMs. I noticed that as well but what stuck out to me was the depth of the V where the serif meets the m...

Re: How Long Have You Collected our Beloved Morgan Dollars ???
As a total newb to this it is nice to read the back stories of some of you. I too collected in my youth but only once I moved to the states. First was baseball cards in the 80's, thankfully my mother is a bit of a hoarder so they were never thrown away and I still have them. That only lasted a few y...

Re: 1900-o/cc VAM-7A
It's easy to miss in circulated condition due to the small parts of the CC that are visible. That's why I always carry a loupe when I head to a coin shop. As a side note I noticed in the description on the VAM page that when talking about the chip over the 9 the description says 7 instead. Not sure...

1900-o/cc VAM-7A
Hi All, I picked this up yesterday and wanted to check with more experienced eyes if this is indeed a VAM-7A. The coin isn't in great shape but it was the first o/cc I've found so I picked it up. It seems to have all the pups for 7A but since it is rare I wanted to make sure I wasn't getting ahead o...

Re: PO01 pricing
Wow! So many things that I never considered or knew about. It never dawned on me that one would collect a 1-58 set, makes total sense when you say it but had never occurred to me. Some very good information in this post so thanks to all who contributed. Another fascinating aspect of Morgans I had no...

Re: PO01 pricing
Thanks all for the answers. It was puzzling to me but in thinking about it after I'd posted the question I suppose that many of the coins in that condition would have been taken out of circulation at banks due to their condition thus making them even more rare. I guess the same applies to all circul...

Re: PO01 pricing
best and worst. sometimes, collectors are weird... Thanks. I have made more money selling lowball coins and collections over higher graded coins. To have the best collection, all you need is a lot of money and make a huge offer. Try and put a lowball collection together is difficult. If you g...

PO01 pricing
Completely novice question here. I was going through the PCGS price guide and was looking at the lowest grades and noticed that the worst grade, PO01 was priced higher than PO02 and same goes fro 02 v 03. Just curious why there seems to be a premium on the worst grade possible. If that would have wo...

Re: 1890-S shared obverse
Check VAM 6. There appear to be a few die pairs identified for it. Thanks messydesk, I scrutinized that one pretty good and nothing I've got matches. I've only found the obverse of 1B that matches all the cracks in the neck, chin, hair and forehead plus the polishing lines in the hair. That's why I...

And a few more with one particularly long field polishing line.

Thought I'd post a few pics of the reverse as I'm still having trouble finding the reverse on the VAM page.

Re: 1881-S repunched mm?
Looks like the obverse of VAM-39. It's got the faint dash under the second eight and the second 8 has a flat base as opposed to rounded like the first 8. First 1 has the notch under the upper crossbar. First 8 has the doubling on bottom right inside loop, surface of upper right loop. The one has the...

1890-S shared obverse
Does anyone know if VAM-1B shares an obverse with one of the other VAMs? I've got all the markers from the Obverse 1-B but my reverse doesn't have a single crack in it. Thanks.

Re: 1881-S repunched mm?
I'm far from an expert, but for what it is worth the bottom right inside of loops, of the 8s both look tripled to me, on yours. I saw the vam 58 has tripled 8's, but I'm not sure if the mint mark looks the same as yours Thanks for the help but it doesn't fit. MM is wrong and I don't have the die sc...

1881-S repunched mm?
I've got an 1881-S with what looks like a repunched mm but I can't find it on the reverse guide. Any help would be appreciated. Looks like a serif in the upper loop left with a couple of polishing lines and possible surface doubling but there is PMD there as well. Date looks doubled at least the 881...

Re: 1889 P doubled ears
"1889 has many doubled ear varieties, often as a result of die fatigue." From the 1889 VAM page. Very high mintage.
