Re: 1888-P VAM7 stage help, please?

I would say it's a 7A.

I've been told on more than 1 occasion to just use LVA's descriptions when determining a VAM. I can see the three gouges at the arrowheads,

I am also willing to loan mine,

Re: 1884-CC VAM 4A help needed

I figured they wouldn't be that significant. But I had never seen that particular clash before and thought it rather interesting.

Re: 1884-CC VAM 4A help needed

Zoomed in further for a closer look. Now I see what could be 3 clashed D and the spacing appears to match what I see at the lips. 1884-CC VAM 4A002.jpg A closer look at the hair vee shows what could be the edges of letters but I had to get really close to see it. 1884-CC VAM 4A007.jpg The reverse sh...

Re: 1884-CC VAM 4A help needed

Have a look at the definitions page. There are some clash overlays on the clashed dies page, link below. http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/wiki/Clashed_dies Thanks. One of those is almost exactly what I think this one would look like. Another degree or 2 of rotation and the D ...

1884-CC VAM 4A help needed

I'm wondering if someone can do an overlay for me. At the mouth, it appears that there has been at least 3 clashes. At the neck/chin, looks like only 2. I see nothing at the neck or hair. But across from the lower serif of the R, poking out of the wheat stalk, it looks like the upper serif of the D ...

Re: 1888-P VAM7 stage help, please?

For what it's worth, I have a 7A attributed by JB. It still has the lines above the left wing and below the right AND gouges in the upper and lower tailfeathers.

I'd be leaning toward 2B1 LDS if it weren't for the polishing roughness. It's not mentioned, but is it present in the 2B's?
So, I'll take that as a distinct possibility of a maybe, maybe not and keep digging.

1882-CC 2B or 2C

So here's another stumper I've come across. Pretty sure it's in the VAM 2 family. Has the doubled 882 and just the left C is filled. After that, I'm getting lost. It has a faint sliver of a 1 present in B1 and EDS of B2. It has a faint lip clash like in B2. It has the chip in G present in B2 and LDS...

Re: 1888-O PMD, planchet flaw, struck through, or what

I'm glad to hear that there're other examples of this.

But now I have to wonder, how did it survive the minting process?

1888-O PMD, planchet flaw, struck through, or what

Looking for a good explanation of what this is. In the fields, the "ribs" are noticeably raised but it's not as visible where they cross the breast yet still present. As to the possible VAM, it looks to have a high date at the far left of normal and the mintmark might be set slightly right. Most lik...

That last one reminded me of Kevin Nealon's character in Little Nicky. Got a good chuckle out of that. Thanks.

Glue, without a doubt in my mind. A little acetone and a poke with a stick will confirm this.
That was it! Thank you, thank you, thank you.

OT - A confusing Quarter

I've recently started going through my error coins to decide which ones to send off for encapsulation and this one appears to have too many thing going on for my under-educated mind to understand. When I 1st looked at it, I called it a struck through retained. It looks like a mirror image section of...

Re: Need advise for my 1889 Morgan

It looks to be a 27. I think I can see the polish lines at the cotton bolls. And that would make sense since 27 is the only near date, double ear listed

A lot of what you noted as being on the coin are "errors" and wouldn't necessarily be noted as part of a "die variety."
