Re: 1888 VAM 39 B but w/out the displaced break

I think in total we'll see your coins are, indeed, early die stages of the 39B -- i.e., straight 39s; my one might be a straight 39 like yours; and the other one a 39B as described. Will be interesting to see if the listing needs a revision of a non-39B/non-cracked version - i.e., a new VAM-39 list...

Re: 1888 VAM 39 B but w/out the displaced break

Thanks. Mine don't have the thread either. I'll post some of the reverse PUPs when I get home.

I do remember seeing a couple of shallow gouges and some scratches in the wing/neck gap.

I have a 15A and two 39Bs (one early but with cracking, the other later with more clear cracks/displacement). I can pull these to get up-close PUP pictures if you'd like?
Gary, I think the 39B's would help considerably.

Thanks

Re: 1888 VAM 39 B but w/out the displaced break

Yeah, in a normal world, I'd say 39 as well.

I'm adding them to the stack to be sent. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Re: 1888 VAM 39 B but w/out the displaced break

I'm pretty certain they aren't VAM 15. Don't have a doubled 8. And these have a pair of distinct scratches in the ear not visible in the Additional photo on the VAM 15 page..

Short of a revision type submission and you state post clash
Technically speaking it would devolve to 39
I wondered if that would still be the case since 39 and 39 A were renamed 15 and 15 A (a different die pair) then delisted. I didn't know if the numbers would be reused.

1888 VAM 39 B but w/out the displaced break

I have (2) coins with the polishing lines below bottom cotton leaf matching the plate photo but neither have a displaced field break at the left stars. They both also have the downward arcing crack visible in the LFCP going across the top of the coin starting below the U in PLURIBUS through the whea...

With the discovery piece in hand, I can confirm you have a VAM 5A, and in a later stage than my example. The overpolishing at the initial and lower hair is not on my example. Probably not enough for a separate listing but certainly worth noting on the page.
That's great! Thanks JR.

1888-S VAM 5 with Over polished obverse

Based on the slanted date and the break through U, I'm reasonably certain it's somewhere in the VAM 5 family. The break is so hard to see. What I do see is an extensive amount of over-polishing throughout the bust. Does anyone have full obverse photos of VAM 5 and 5A? For VAM 5, there's one Addition...

Re: 1888 VAM 7 Clarified

If it doesn't have any of the 7A2 gouges, it's a 7A1. My understanding is the fading of the lines would be too arbitrary to try to list. All it would take is a weaker strike for them to not be visible and then on the next strike they're back. In other VAMs, when a feature fades it may revert back to...

Re: 1888 VAM 7 Clarified

In 7A1, some of the shallower lines above the wing are still present but faint. In 7A2, only 2-3 remain but are very faint. They have completely faded by 7B1. The bottommost remains throughout though it gets shorter, likely due to repeated light feeder finger rubs. For the gouges at the tips of the ...

Re: 1888 VAM 7 Clarified

An incredible piece of work that I completely applaud - and am the direct beneficiary of as Jonnie's work helped me nail down at least 3 of my problem children (difficult to attribute varieties of this date). Thanks mate! You're very welcome, Gary. And Thank you, Jodemyer. This series was very frus...

Re: 1901 O VAM?

Check it against the description for VAM 65. It's in the "Dubious Listings" at the bottom of the page. It looks very similar to one I posted a few months ago. http://www.vamworld.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7700 I didn't include a picture of the lines at the eye but they look very familiar. I'll b...

I have sent the 1st one I found. Both Johns have discussed it and they want to see a much less circulated version thinking there may be doubling hiding.

Re: Need some help with an 86 P

The majority of what I've dug through has been beautiful coins and if the scratches are still that prominent after circulating, I'd love to see it mint.

So I keep looking.
