That's great! Thanks JR.vampicker wrote: ↑Wed Oct 25, 2023 2:34 amWith the discovery piece in hand, I can confirm you have a VAM 5A, and in a later stage than my example. The overpolishing at the initial and lower hair is not on my example. Probably not enough for a separate listing but certainly worth noting on the page.

1888-S VAM 5 with Over polished obverse
Based on the slanted date and the break through U, I'm reasonably certain it's somewhere in the VAM 5 family. The break is so hard to see. What I do see is an extensive amount of over-polishing throughout the bust. Does anyone have full obverse photos of VAM 5 and 5A? For VAM 5, there's one Addition...

Re: 1888 VAM 7 Clarified
If it doesn't have any of the 7A2 gouges, it's a 7A1. My understanding is the fading of the lines would be too arbitrary to try to list. All it would take is a weaker strike for them to not be visible and then on the next strike they're back. In other VAMs, when a feature fades it may revert back to...

Re: 1888 VAM 7 Clarified
In 7A1, some of the shallower lines above the wing are still present but faint. In 7A2, only 2-3 remain but are very faint. They have completely faded by 7B1. The bottommost remains throughout though it gets shorter, likely due to repeated light feeder finger rubs. For the gouges at the tips of the ...

Re: 1888 VAM 7 Clarified
An incredible piece of work that I completely applaud - and am the direct beneficiary of as Jonnie's work helped me nail down at least 3 of my problem children (difficult to attribute varieties of this date). Thanks mate! You're very welcome, Gary. And Thank you, Jodemyer. This series was very frus...

Re: 1901 O VAM?
Check it against the description for VAM 65. It's in the "Dubious Listings" at the bottom of the page. It looks very similar to one I posted a few months ago. http://www.vamworld.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7700 I didn't include a picture of the lines at the eye but they look very familiar. I'll b...

Re: Need some help with an 86 P
I have sent the 1st one I found. Both Johns have discussed it and they want to see a much less circulated version thinking there may be doubling hiding.

Re: Need some help with an 86 P
The majority of what I've dug through has been beautiful coins and if the scratches are still that prominent after circulating, I'd love to see it mint.
So I keep looking.

Another plus is I can now compare the three to see what they might share: Obverse -Possible doubling (minor) = "1" lower right side & "8 8 6" left side (visible on coins 1 & 3) and profile at nose (visible on all) 1886 Unk #1 Date.jpg 1886 Unk #3 Date 070.jpg -Chip at top of P in PLURIBUS -Portion o...

Re: Need some help with an 86 P - UPDATE
This one made the trip to JB and him and JR decided that until they can see a high grade specimen, in order to see whether there is any minor doubling, it would be listed as a VAM 1. After looking at a few 1000 86 P's, I have been able to acquire (2) more. Both raw and none of them better than AU 50...

PSA:1902-O C3 reverse Counterfeited counterfeit
Recently purchased this coin on eBay. Couldn't tell a lot from the photos. It wasn't until it was in hand that the problems started. In hindsight, I probably should have known something was up since it is an oval O. It has rounded edges where devices meet the field but, -It doesn't ping when dropped...

Yeah, it's missing from the date position page but it is on the main page and the oval O page.

Re: 1888 VAM 7D question
I think I've decided the answer is Yes. Shoulder struck thru.jpg There's another on ebay now. https://www.ebay.com/itm/354843464885 Also looks like it was happening at the same time on her nose as well. Struck Thru Nose.jpg They do go away by the time the field scratch by the left talon appears. I k...
