Re: OT - Another Major Silver Dollar Rarity

?
Nothing remotely "rare" about mutilated Trade dollars - they were intended to be melted in south Asia.

Re: New VAM-e Sent - Michael Fey Buys LVA Assets

One might hope that this will be a beginning to resolution of the clutter that permeates VAMers' corner of the hobby. in turn, that will help your hobby to attract and retain new members.

Re: 1878 VAM 131 proof dies

Difficult to guess.... The President and other VIPs got patterns of the original design in 1877 and were likely satisfied with those. The March proofs would have been 8-TF; December would be from the revised 7-TF reverse with updated obverse.

Re: 3 Fresh Rolls of Carson City's Plus

RE: "The reverses are hands down better looking than the obverse." This is because the coins fell from the press into the receiving bin face-up. Thus, the obverse got hit by falling coins more often than the reverse. The first coins falling into empty bin might survive with few marks since some of t...

Very nice! That's what they used to look like before the phony toning and dip-n-strippers go hold of 'em!

Re: Documents requested from NARA - December Update - November 2021 Update

The final impact is that I can get about 2 days per month, with each day being less than one-half normal productivity. Expenses and total time remain the same, so the cost per page is more than double.

Re: Documents requested from NARA - December Update - November 2021 Update

I have to use a camera for the material's you are looking for - they vary in size too much to work well on a scanner.(I have a 12x17 flatbed scanner, but many of the original documents are larger and NARA does not allow scanning of anything larger than the scanner's face plate.)

Re: Documents requested from NARA - December Update - November 2021 Update

After several months of waiting, I got an appointment for Nov 19 and was able to scan about 400 documents between 9am and 4pm. I have another appointment for the 30th where I hope to complete scanning the same box. This is really slow compared to using a camera. For comparison, using my Nikon camera...

Re: Documents requested from NARA - December Update - November 2021 Update

Yes. At College Park they have small phone stands you can borrow (free). (Phone calls are not permitted.) Any kind of camera is OK, but you cannot use flash. Any supplemental lighting has to be approved in advance. You can also bring in a copy stand or tripod. Any small camera accessories have to fi...

Re: Explaination for handling and reissue of reverse dies

There is no single document. This is collected from many letters and notes -- it is uncommon to find neat and tidy explanations of ordinary methods and processes. Procedures also changed depending on what was available at each mint, and the results of annual supply contract bids.

Re: Explaination for handling and reissue of reverse dies

A composite die handling process from multiple comments in letters..... Dies were coated in either light oil or beeswax, then packed in sawdust and shipped in wooden boxes. At the mints they were kept in the Coiner's vault, typically in a locked cabinet. Before use they were cleaned with solvent and...

1880-CC Rev. of '78, anyone?
A logical possibility...and it would have been a new die.

Explaination for handling and reissue of reverse dies

This letter, located today, will give VAMers a better idea of how dies were handled for Morgan dollars. It also states how dies from past years might have been used several years later on other denominations such as halves and quarters. This can explain certain discrepancies observed in these series...

Re: 2021-O Polished Die?

Reminds me of the sloppy die repair from the old San Francisco Mint.

In any case, this and the other Morgan imitations should be examples of full, sharp detail.

If you are bored here's some reading material:

Apparently there are folks that collect Coin Silver Flatware.
