RE: "Where are the plate shots?"
Full plates were served last Thursday and have, since then, been thoroughly scraped, licked, finger rubbed and scrubbed clean. Nary a leftover bit of roast VAM, 'tater transfer, or oyster stuffed crack remain.

Re: Additional New Orleans Mint correspondence available soon 1879-1898
Here's a quick sample showing delivery quantities by date Oct-Dec 1879. (There are additional statements, but this is the only one seen so far -to 1882- that has this much detail.)

Re: Peace Dollars
Try A Guide Book of Peace Dollars by Roger W. Burdette (me), Whitman Publishing LLC. Look for the 4th edition. Available from most coin book sellers. This presents the factual story of this coin from concept to first issues including pattern pieces and the "1964-D Dollar." It has a few of the more p...

Re: 1804 dollar story as of 1899
Since folks here collect silver dollars, maybe these should be called "Silver Nuggets." (As opposed "Gold Nuggets" or "Excessively Processed Chicken Nuggets.")

Re: 1804 dollar story as of 1899
In a letter on the same subject a few weeks later, an Acting Mint Director, merely quoted the delivery total for 1804. This implies there was no standard reply to 1804 dollar questions.

Re: 2021 counter-stamp Peace $
Your statement is false. They are counterfeits. All that is required are the statements of value and national origin. These comply with the law's "likeness or similitude" clause.

Re: Mint Director explains cause of cracked planchet coins
A "vein of impurities" typically begins as a small lump or fragment that becomes elongated during multiple passes in the rolling process. I tiny piece of slag can become a vein-like thread stretching several inches along the length of a strip. Limited documentation indicates a strip might occasional...

There might be more cracked 1921 Morgans and 1922 Peace(s) hiding in collections and stale inventory. That's why I used this photo.

Mint Director explains cause of cracked planchet coins
Occasionally coins are found struck on cracked planchets. This letter from Director Roberts mentions the primary cause. [These should not be confused with cracked dies.] May 2, 1899. John Machen, Esq., Langdon, N. Dakota. Sir, In reply to your letter of the 25th ultimo, you are respectfully informed...

Re: 1878 Dies used, Philadelphia
Very low numbers suggest proof coinage, such as the 3- and 5-cent minor coins. Notice that all the 3 & 5 cent reverse dies were carried forward. "Zero" for 5-cent obverse dies is logically impossible, unless all "1878 proof 5-cent" were actually dated "1877." But that does not seem to be the case. N...

Re: 1878 Dies used, Philadelphia
1. The document does not mention proof dies. 2. This is for the Philadelphia Mint, only. Other mints supplied similar reports and they might turn up in future searches. Digitization and review is a slow process. Every page has to be handled individually. NARA does not permit use of automated page tu...

Re: New considerations for the SSDC "Them's the Breaks (Basic)" registry set
So....it's not something aimed at attracting the interest of new specialty collectors. Could this be one of several approaches?
