Re: Archival research - November

Thanks for the offer! I like to maximize useful time at the archives, so I have a high protein breakfast before leaving home, and then work straight through at NARA with only quick 'necessity' breaks (usually while the computer is exporting files). The day is 9am to 4pm, but accomplishment varies wi...

Re: Archival research - November

The materials listed above have been posted to NNP. Friday (tomorrow) I plan to scan E-235 (Letters sent) vols 51-54. When these are complete volumes 1 through 60 will be available on NNP for research. These go along with Entry 229 (Letters received) and Entry 6 (internal letters between Coiner and ...

Will they also grade dead earthworms on my driveway?

A confused mixture of opinions, assumptions and unsupported measurements. This tango goes backward so many steps I've lost count.

Re: Date placement querry to the experts

Defining date position as described in your post is without meaning, since relative locations can vary. You must measure in relation to fixed reference points within the central portrait.

I'm attempting to post items of interest to Morgan and Peace dollar collectors. These are more about how and why, rather than varieties.

Re: Cost of making silver dollar dies 1887

Correspondence indicates New Orleans was a persistent source of "drama" and internal conflict from its beginning to closing. It was the only US Mint where a serious proposal was made to use slave labor. (Immediately rejected.) Persistent jockeying for authority, and inefficiency matched only by the ...

Re: Archival research - November

The following boxes and volumes were digitized late last week and should appear on NNP during the latter part of this week. Boxes (letters received) cover the last months of 1900. (Box 128 includes a complete Annual Settlement for the New York Assay Office for June 30, 1900. This was not digitized d...

Re: Cost of making silver dollar dies 1887

The original is on page #65 (out of 500) in fair copy journal 46 at the national archives in College Park, Md. (The small code at the top of the page identified the source document.) I scanned this volume last Thursday. If you go to the Newman Numismatic Portal (NNP.edu) you can access many US Mint ...

Re: (somewhat blinded) Mint mark research question: What'd you call this?

"None of the above." At least four static reference points are required to objectively evaluate mintmark characteristics. Here, "static" means they are part of the central design element common to all hubs, and NOT positioned relative to any other points. The VAM descriptions do not follow this and ...

Re: An open letter to all VAM members

Erik, I presume you have a plaster model of the Great Seal obverse (eagle) signed by George Morgan and are looking for information. Is that correct? If you will PM me with your email, I will contact you and you can then provide more details and good photos. There is a moderate amount of US Mint-Stat...

Re: An open letter to all VAM members

There were so many variations of the Great Seal in the period you mention that it's doubtful anyone can give an absolute answer. Look to the State Department for the best response. Treasury Department, Office of the Secretary Washington, D.C. April 17, 1882 Hon. H.C. Burchard, Director of the Mint, ...
