Re: Documents requested from NARA - December Update - November 2021 Update

I have to use a camera for the material's you are looking for - they vary in size too much to work well on a scanner.(I have a 12x17 flatbed scanner, but many of the original documents are larger and NARA does not allow scanning of anything larger than the scanner's face plate.)

Re: Documents requested from NARA - December Update - November 2021 Update

After several months of waiting, I got an appointment for Nov 19 and was able to scan about 400 documents between 9am and 4pm. I have another appointment for the 30th where I hope to complete scanning the same box. This is really slow compared to using a camera. For comparison, using my Nikon camera...

Yes. At College Park they have small phone stands you can borrow (free). (Phone calls are not permitted.) Any kind of camera is OK, but you cannot use flash. Any supplemental lighting has to be approved in advance. You can also bring in a copy stand or tripod. Any small camera accessories have to fi...

Re: Explaination for handling and reissue of reverse dies

There is no single document. This is collected from many letters and notes -- it is uncommon to find neat and tidy explanations of ordinary methods and processes. Procedures also changed depending on what was available at each mint, and the results of annual supply contract bids.

Re: Explaination for handling and reissue of reverse dies

A composite die handling process from multiple comments in letters..... Dies were coated in either light oil or beeswax, then packed in sawdust and shipped in wooden boxes. At the mints they were kept in the Coiner's vault, typically in a locked cabinet. Before use they were cleaned with solvent and...

1880-CC Rev. of '78, anyone?
A logical possibility...and it would have been a new die.

Explaination for handling and reissue of reverse dies

This letter, located today, will give VAMers a better idea of how dies were handled for Morgan dollars. It also states how dies from past years might have been used several years later on other denominations such as halves and quarters. This can explain certain discrepancies observed in these series...

Re: 2021-O Polished Die?

Reminds me of the sloppy die repair from the old San Francisco Mint.

In any case, this and the other Morgan imitations should be examples of full, sharp detail.

Apparently there are folks that collect Coin Silver Flatware.

Re: way OT but wondering....

Your butter pick (also used for cleaning ear wax) says sterling, but a lot of US-made silverware was made from melted silver dollars, particularly in the antebellum south.

Re: Yesteryear Vam Collecting/Investing

The number of "varieties" tends to increase over time.
The quantity of each "variety" tends to increase over time.
The quantity of "variety" collectors tends to decrease as the number of "varieties" increase.

Etc..... Hence: Don't collect expecting to make a cash profit.

Re: 2022 Proof Morgan's and Peace Dollars

The technical people have been advised of several short comings, including their "sandpaper" frosting. However, nothing is likely to change unless a new director demands it. I would bet that any engraver given the opportunity to recreate 19th century craftsmanship would jump at the chance. Pity it ...

OK. I see my error. The prominent clashing is from EPU, not USA.

Thanks!

Re: one of the top letter clashed coins i've seen to-date non-morgan.

Pup-picker - Please explain. It's Overton 110. But that really begs more information. The photos do not show a clash from a half dollar reverse die - or any single reverse die. The relative positions of visible lettering and the motto bits do not match a coin.

OT. Informal proof reading of articles

I have two little draft articles ready for publication, and I think they would benefit from the thoughts of a couple of collectors. They are not directly about VAMs or silver dollars. The purposes are: pick up typos, continuity, and and overall accessibility. Anyone who is interested just send me a P...
