Re: Help with date placement

Ghost , definitely not 'inappropriate' in my eyes. Similar to LateDateMorganGuy and vampicker I don't foresee using this system because, and this is only my opinion, it exceeds Occam's razor - helping define parameters to help clarify discussions is a necessary part of good science but there is a n...

Re: 1921P....VAM-41B...HOT 100.......?

Nice pictures - you've figured out your light source just right. Congrats.

I believe you've created a new category for the coin - I'd tend to agree it is a Top 100 coin, but not a coin that gets to be counted in the Hot 50 list, too, at the same time?

Re: OT 1920 S BUFFALO NICKEL NGCMS65

I thought finding one in a straight UNC was tough. MS61 or 62 a bit more difficult (and expensive) but a 65? Yikes my friend. What a great coin!

Re: Archival research - November

The materials listed above have been posted to NNP. Friday (tomorrow) I plan to scan E-235 (Letters sent) vols 51-54. When these are complete volumes 1 through 60 will be available on NNP for research. These go along with Entry 229 (Letters received) and Entry 6 (internal letters between Coiner and...

Re: Date placement querry to the experts

I'm hoping that this coin is a VAM-11, based on the date alone (well, apart from the massive reverse doubling) but I've confirmed that I don't see an alligator eye, doubled stars, etc.

Again, hugely appreciative of your input. Y'all are superstars.

Re: Date placement querry to the experts

Date placement can enter the grey area. Take a look at this date placement. The same obverse die was listed as both "normal" and "near" by Leroy in two different listings. This is why I don't use line drawing to figure a date placement. The DPIS is about as good as it gets, but even it has grey are...

Re: Date placement querry to the experts

Thank you all. You got right to the point(s). The http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/wiki/1900-P_VAM-11 page might need to be updated, then, because of the 2.2 vs 2.5 denticle placement (versus the 24) mentioned. Yes, the page mentions what Mike7E nailed - LH3B45 - is there a re...

Date placement querry to the experts

No additional information to provide because I'd like a less biased opinion. (Those of you 'in the know' will recognize the coin based on the question, but pretend you don't know a priori...) Using a rather inaccurate but previously described nomenclature, would you consider the date to be 2.2 or 2....

Re: 1901 O BOLD letter doubling on V 1A / 20

Why would it be an EDS if it is clashed twice with two t transfers? One t transfer should be the EDS. Or better yet, as JB alluded to, break it into three different listings for each t transfer. Above my paygrade to decide, but the clashes could have happend in such a rapid fashion that there was n...

Re: 1901 O BOLD letter doubling on V 1A / 20

Agree 100% that the only way to judge these are to have all variants in hand - especially the DCs. I have one I've called a 1A EDS because I saw no doubling of the 0 as described on the VAM-20 page (although my coin appears to match the pictures on that page). Not wanting to add to the confusion, bu...

Re: 1887 Vam 12?

Exciting to find them for sure, but watch out for paying premiums on all coins. Yes, even Top 100 coins might not warrant much, if any, premium. The 87 12 or 21A is one... Others can chime in but even if you did have significant letter transfer (which you'd need to have a true 12A) you'd not be well...

Re: Veterans DAY

Some of the most fond and tragic memories I have was during my internship at the VA hospital in Cheyenne, Wyoming in the late 1980s. Some vets served in Nam, some Korea, many WW2 and, yes, even a few in WW1! These were unbelievably brave women and men but were all scarred and scared on some level. I...

Thanks, @Vam-mysterio. Hope these help. A few different light angles but not showing much detail in any of the areas asked. Also looked to see if there was any line/scratching in the ribbon on the obverse - similar: nothing I could see.

The 1889-P I posted above is a v13b. ;) 89-O? Crumbled stars, no? Haha, believe it or not, it hit me that I posted that incorrectly while driving home from work! Yup, 89- O v13b! Texting and driving while holding a cigarette and beer, combing the mullett. Oh, wait. Wrong chat forum, sorry!

Re: EBAY 1878 s vam 18 Spaghetti Wing PCGS ms62

Finding this in a 62 grade is fabulous - love to see pictures as I'm not a FleaBay buyer. Love to see the MS63 that someone has, too, because the FCPs on the variety page are OK, but not that nice? I have pictures of my 18A NGC61 picked up a while ago but don't think they'd add to much detail. Relat...

Is poor Dennis still amassing price data? 😂

Yes I am. 20,000 entries in the 2005-2008 database set; coming up on 54,000 in the 2009-now set.
And you're still able to look at a coin and spot a very subtle change that helps ID it...? #jediknightyouare, hum?

Part 2 showing the date digits. I see the one doubled on the bottom of the top vertical bar, and the 8 and 9 on the upper outer right sides, but nothing to speak of on the 7:
