Re: 1896-P VAM-5A obverse scratches?

Embarassingly I do now see a clear mention of "Some heavy die polishing lines in Phrygian cap top" on the VAM-5A page. Oy. I'd not abuse anyone's graces any more but I'd recommend adding this coin to the 2023 top 12 coins to find list... Hardly any registered in SSDC but a wonderfully complex variet...

Re: 1900-P near 2x date C3 rev - not seeing it described

Brilliant and makes sense. VAM-5 most likely then? Don't believe it to be a VAM-6 based on descriptions.

Thanks again, John!

Re: 1900-P near 2x date C3 rev - not seeing it described

First right star appears completely normal as do the other stars: First two on the right: WIN_20221201_16_48_59_Pro.jpg First right star top (where I'd think the machine doubling would be): WIN_20221201_16_49_58_Pro.jpg And the bottom (that might indicate a VAM-23) - apparently clean: WIN_20221201_1...

1900-P near 2x date C3 rev - not seeing it described

I'm sure this is somewhere but I don't think this totally matches up the closest potentials. All digits clearly doubled and looking to be 'real' doubles - not machine doubling. Near date, so this rules out the description of the VAM-12 which is clearly very near but describes the digit doubling in a...

1896-P VAM-5A obverse scratches?

Was going to post this in the 'No one ever posts picks anymore' link, but this contains an additional question. Yes, I recently picked this up at a local shop (and yes, buying Morgans in England!) and loved it outright for the doubled 1 and rust patches on the right wing. Looking at the obverse I sa...

Re: 1900-P V18 & 30 - same or different?

Thanks! I'll happily take the 18 - crikey the 30s are, indeed, evil mimetics because the reverses are almost spot on to one another.

Again, happy with an 18...

1900-P V18 & 30 - same or different?

I'm a bit confused by the individual pages. The pages suggest they are different - with the 18 being a Hot 50 but the 30 not - but the pictures and descriptions are confusing. As I read them I see they share the same obverse (clearly stated on the 18 description), yet they also share a 2 olive rever...

Re: From patterns to a VAM-9 launch - any historical info?

Classic quote to extend RogerB 's comment about the artistic abilities of some of the players involved in our (non-darkside) hobby. This one from none other than the incredible sculpter and designer of multiple stunning coins, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. In wrtiting to President Theodore Roosevelt, ASG ...

Re: From patterns to a VAM-9 launch - any historical info?

Thanks, RogerB ! I'd say I have a copy of the book but that'd only be partially true - it is in Wyoming with my father (who loved it) and I'm in the UK awaiting its transit to me (eventually). Same for the 'big book' I bought years ago so I'm without the luxury of that one, too... Appreciate the add...

Re: 1903 O

Agree wth vampicker - the MM took a shot along the way (PMD). Looks to be a bit high and perhaps slightly tilted left - more like VAM-7 than VAM-6. Can't rule out VAM-13 (but doesn't have the chip of 13A from what I can see) or VAM-16 or VAM-19 without more pictures of PUPs. From the ones I've looke...

Re: From patterns to a VAM-9 launch - any historical info?

Makes me wonder if Barber (dad, William) had a hand (literally or metaphorically) in the decision to run with 8 at the start (assuming their relationship was less than amicable) and Barber wanted to insert his superiority (at least in his job description) somehow. Quick decision time, too, to shift ...

Matches my lovely one (well, she's lovely to me). Cracks up near the left wing are there, too... Matter of fact, mine looks like a few of them (O, wing, and M) progress all the way to the denticles. Can't quite see if yours are the same but look to be?

Re: 1879O Vam 43 I believe

Nice coin and nice pictures. As I read it, it could be the 43 you're leaning towards. The date picture matches pretty closely but the picture and description on/about the reverse doesn't give much to go on, eh?

From patterns to a VAM-9 launch - any historical info?

Quick research question and sorry this might be well known information to some (but not to me): Many, if not most (or all?) of the pattern coins George was working on had 7 tail feathers ( http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/wiki/Morgan_Pattern ) but come March 11th 1878 the seri...

Ghost , definitely not 'inappropriate' in my eyes. Similar to LateDateMorganGuy and vampicker I don't foresee using this system because, and this is only my opinion, it exceeds Occam's razor - helping define parameters to help clarify discussions is a necessary part of good science but there is a n...

Re: 1921P....VAM-41B...HOT 100.......?

Nice pictures - you've figured out your light source just right. Congrats.

I believe you've created a new category for the coin - I'd tend to agree it is a Top 100 coin, but not a coin that gets to be counted in the Hot 50 list, too, at the same time?
