Re: 1900 p.... VAM-Misstrike- Error- What is it?
I'm not buying this as a die stage based on the pictures. If I was to hazard a guess, I'd say there was residue built up around the stars and then the coin saw further circulation. Later the crud was removed. If it crossed my desk, I'd most likely tank it for environmental damage. I'd really have t...

@JackBnimble01, what a wonderful series of stories within a bigger story that is still unclear.
Myth? Lore? Reality? Doesn't matter... Joseph Campbell would approve of this version of a hero's journey even if the hero is a round slab of silver (or not...).

Re: Calling ALL VAMMers - Rotated dies
when entering a coin into the registry there is an option (now) to check for rotated die nd how much rotation. additionally there is a way to modify an exsisting entry. Brilliant. My wife, however, will not be happy knowing you are aiding and abetting activities that are asking me to choose buyuing...

Re: Calling ALL VAMMers - Rotated dies
Thanks for pointing out the rotated die page, lured_in_again Love the thought as these are fun to find. General question: How, though, to report ones that are actually rotated versus those that are not? For example, plenty of 1888-O VAM-9 coins in existence (I have three without trying to find them)...

Wonderful news. I was waiting to hear the end result as it certainly looked like an MPD to me (and my untrained eyes).
Congrats.

Wow. Some may not want to read what follows but please think about what I'm going to say before replying: The complete story is that we are collectively guilty of supporting them and their incompetency. Every time we send coins in to them, and pay for the service (however good or bad), each time we ...

This is quite possibly one of my favorite posts because I'm an addict to the hobby and have been studying the human brain for 30+ years. In all its... er... glory. The only thing I'd like to add to the conversation is something called the 'fallacy of introspection' - also known as the 'introspection...

Re: 1898-P far date?
Thanks @LateDateMorganGuy. That's one of the many things I love about this subjective hobby: what is normal in one series is not normal in another; what is slanted in one isn't in another; but all of them are somehow attractive and I want them in my set...

Re: 1898-P far date?
Thanks, @DurhamJnKY.
Mine looks even a little further right. I can't make out the doubling of the 8 but the 14 was a good start and might prove to be it in the end.
Here's a low resolution of the date but more up close:

1898-P far date?
As I look at the described varieties, there are only near, normal and slanted (normal) dates - but none listed as far. Might have some slant to it, but none of the slanted dates are (apparently) as far. Do I read the date placement correctly as far? If not, none of the other pictures look to be 'as ...

Appreciate this post because I continue to learn. Been hunting the same hunt unsuccessfully but holding out hope for that elusive 23A in all her glory.

Stories like this are just as valuable to me as the coins we have fun hunting.
Thanks for sharing a bit of your journey. Sounds like an amazing experience anyone would treasure.

Perfect! VAM 14 needs to be listed under the pitted dies guide. Thank you. MarkyB , as we all explore more the more we learn that somethings are very common and well described. Re: Quick 1934-S darkside question - maching doubling or bad eyes or other?
Thanks to you and @colwillys.
I blame the combo of gin and aged eyes. Will try and get better pictures because they really don't show what I think I'm seeing (imaginary or not).
Appreciate your input.

Quick 1934-S darkside question - maching doubling or bad eyes or other?
The supposed tiara and olive leaf doubling I'm seeing is likely due to the gin, my aging eyes, machine doubling or they might be real. I have no idea so I'd ask the darkside gurus (or others who really just want to chat...) for an expert opinion. Don't think it a VAM-3 (I don't see a lot of doubling...

Re: Patience, persistence, and a little bit of luck
Update on an old story.... finally sent the 9B in to ANACS for certification. Cleaned G4 - about what I expected. But it did fill one of the missing slots in my set and is currently the only one listed. Amazing for as tough as it was to find one, it raised my 91 o set score by 16 points Just glad t...
