Just curious, @fogie or @Mhomei, I see you have versions of this variety (SSDC database) -- can you post pictures of the MM?

Re: I had a fun day... stars and morE

A fun comparison of how the E clashes can be in slightly different places due to slight die rotation when the dies slammed into one another. They might be different but each is purty in 'er own way. PLUS, if you look very closely at the http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/wiki/18...

A fun 1890-O VAM-13(A) die study in the making

I have two coins that both show extensive die fatigue that match the http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/wiki/1890-O_VAM-13A description. I'll show more pictures later but wanted to post something straightaway. Interestingly to me, the 13A pictures (of my coins as well as the one...

Re: Help with 1922-D VAM designation

iI'd agree with JB here that it's a 2P1; possible 2P2 but it'd need to have the raised break near the 1 to be that. Crack on the right side is shown in part on the 2P2 page so perhaps the lighting and angle of your photos simply hid the raised break at the date digit? I'm out of my element with Peac...

Re: Acid before, Acid after ?? 1878-S short nock

I'm seeing more road rash than acid. I have multiple ones that look like that - nothing to me but good old abuse with some other object that won (or perhaps not, but at least made its mark).

Re: Is this an RPM?

Doubling - but likely machine doubling. Look at the 'shelves' on the D and the O below... and will likely find other features on the reverse. Where the coin slid away from the die right after being stuck.

Pretty, sometimes; frustrating, often.

Re: 1884-CC VAM 5...A?

Thanks as this helps. That decision is above my pay grade, for sure, but I'm thinking it a 50:50 shot. Not bad, but not a guarantee. The big boys (JR and/or JB) would need to chime in. Clash up to the n shows the outline on the neck would show most of the rightside of the letter sticking off of the ...

Re: 1884-CC VAM 5...A?

Is this not a clashed N? or up above my circled area sure looks like it to me! Awesome pictures! Oh I can see it , at first my eye thought it was too far away from the wing transfer on the neck line, It has occurred to me that in order to print out a true hillbilly clash tool I would need an exact ...

Eliseown , welcome to the community. It is highly recommend you begin your own post if you have a question about a different coin/topic (instead of 'usurping' someone else's - but in reality it makes it easier for us to find and keep track of different communications so things don't get buried deep...

Re: 1921 B over S in "PLURIBUS"

Honestly I'd recommend picking up a USB microscope for your own use. My 80 year old dad has one and loves it. Not too expensive, too, anymore so no real financial disincentive - but huge hobby incentive! With ease you'll be able to capture photos like I just got: WIN_20230322_07_39_36_Pro.jpg For th...

Thanks @keilg1 To be honest I didn't know this existed  Saw the photos on eBay and then looked it up. Thank you very much Mr. keilg1, :D I greatly appreciate the information you have given me because even though it doesn't give me a direct answer it allows me to do my own research. Sense in my opinion it would not be as fun to look through Morgan dollar VAMs if the solution was clear cut, I persona...

Sorry, meant to ask if you can show up-close pictures of the original coin posted (specifically all the letters - RIBUS). No other coins will necessarily help us as much as the original that shows what you think you're seeing. A bit confused, too, beause anything that supposedly happened to a master...

Re: 1882-O VAM-36 O/O Center Dubious Listing

Interesting looking. Pictures probably aren't showing the full amount that you can see. Hard to imagine an O/O having such consistent duplicate strikes - i.e., any doubling on the inner left side would correspond to an overstrike with the punch as it was shifted right, only to have a similar event h...

Re: 1921 B over S in "PLURIBUS"

Looks normal from here. Schmootz around letters is very common (& normal) and is a relic of the process that puts the devices in the die. Agree. I'll remain in the 'not seeing this' and 'not following the explanation' camp. Fascinating discussion and definitely to be encouraged. In the end, though,...

Re: I need some help finding what VAM this 1880-S is?

Looks tilted to me. Educational opportunity: Searching the 80S page for 'tilt' only IDs the following as tilted left medium MMs: 40/40A, 61, 65 and 114. Not quite correct information? Partially because of confusion and partially because there are other varieties with tilted medium MMs that don't app...
