1889-P VAM-42 Quad Clash Pictures for Page

I have a PCGS MS65, Heritage Auction 131807 Lot 23956, and a raw MS63 that show one major clash at the jaw and three smaller ones closer to the neckline. After much review I have settled on them being VAM-42. "Doubled Ear & Cotton Leaves, Right Stars, Far Date". One reason it took so long as I was t...

Re: 1889-P Very Far Date, second 8 doubled, open high 9, strongly clashed obverse die, No clash reverse. Help Please

Ah I see the light and you were correct sir VAM-38. However I propose LDS as I cranked up the scope and found residual die cracks at the date. They were almost polished off of this die stage. The single large clash still looks a little off as the VAM-38 Full Coin Picture has two, but one got polishe...

Re: 1889-P Very Far Date, second 8 doubled, open high 9, strongly clashed obverse die, No clash reverse. Help Please

This coin has many of the markers of VAM-38 but is missing a few. The Full Coin picture on the page is listed as an EDS but already has the breaks at the date, which are not on this coin. The 'diagnostic' marks at the Cotton bolls are not there either but could have been polished away. Would the bre...

Re: 1889-P Very Far Date, second 8 doubled, open high 9, strongly clashed obverse die, No clash reverse. Help Please

Thanks for hidden nugget that the 9 punch had the mark. Similar to a 3 punch in 1883. I checked and no chip behind the ear and no polishing lines in cotton bolls so not VAM-9 or VAM-38, which appear to be the same with the latter version having die breaks at the date. Overpolishing can be seen in th...

Re: 1889-P Very Far Date, second 8 doubled, open high 9, strongly clashed obverse die, No clash reverse. Help Please

Thanks for the feedback. The reason I was thinking it was unusual is that the VAM-23A page states “Reverse C3a - No die clash marks on reverse die very unusual, especially for such strong die clash marks on obverse.” It looks like a very strong clash that was partially polished away. I did recheck t...

1889-P Very Far Date, second 8 doubled, open high 9, strongly clashed obverse die, No clash reverse. Help Please

This coin has a very sharp clash mark at the neck jaw juncture that almost looks like a die crack. This area also shows signs of over-polishing and a slight curved die displacement from jaw to neck. With this strong a clash the i and n should be in the field under the clash but were probably polishe...

Re: Price Guide!

Congratulations on a lot of work well done. There will always be the feeling that some of our favorites should be lower when we buy and higher if we ever sell (what is sell?). This is very good step towards normalizing a very fluid market. The auction outliers, where an abnormal bid gets the coin, n...

Mine is the new VAM-86 and it has what looks like a bolt going thru top of 0.
I had asked about the VAM-85 as it was not posted yet. Not sure who submitted that.

Re: Struck Thru Grease?

When I see struck thru grease this cent comes to mind. 2.53 g normal weight Reverse a little fuzzy and weak outer lettering but Lincoln Memorial statue in center well struck. Obverse strongest part of strike is center of Lincoln bust. Date area smooth and all lettering weak. Cent Reverse.jpg Cent st...

Took me some time to post this. First my scanner refused to save the printout of Leroy’s pictures as jpg files even though I set it to do that. Next took pics with my iPhone but those transfer to PC through cable as HEIC files so non-MAC PC can’t open them. Finally downloaded app to my iPhone to con...
