Were the dies hardened in Philly prior to shipment to the branch mints? I thought I read somewhere that they were shipped soft to thwart the possibility of use if stolen.

The dot above the T looks raised based on the light direction. As far as the grade, maybe 63 SPL. The obverse may be PL but the reverse may just miss. Always a challenge grading flat bed scanner images.. :)

Perfect! VAM 14 needs to be listed under the pitted dies guide. Thank you. Best not to rely on the extra guides to find things. Many are good, but they aren't consistently maintained. You are correct. I'm not seeing the die scratch on the eagle's left wing. My example is missing this artifact as well.

Here's one I find very interesting being such a fan of the 1883-O VAM 1C, Look at 1881-O VAM 16, all examples are PL or DMPL. :o
