Re: what's with this S? (1921-P)

Well, opening this thread was a let down, Dennis. I thought you had finally capitulated and started on 1921-S Morgans too.

Re: Just picked on Heritage

I recall that when the Top 100 came out, this was unknown in Mint State, only 2 or 3 AUs were known, and it was considered among the highest rarity in all grades. Well, it is difficult to attribute and pick in VF and below without other markers, admittedly. Times have changed and UNC have been found...

Re: Master level challenge....

I have not looked at one in probably a decade, but maybe 1878-S VAM-6 (the original double RIB).

That is an interesting variety in how many are in high grades. I have had several in 66 and 67 and they come colorful sometimes too.

Re: KC coin show

I need to spend a quality afternoon or evening putting up a lot more events on the Registry server calendar.

Looks like Brian [Raines] is setting up there.

1903 VAM-9/18

It appears that VAM-18 should rightfully be listed as VAM-9A. VAM-18 is simply a collar clash on the VAM-9 die pair. Another issue. I have found another coin with that obverse die but with a different reverse die. There is no die scratch in the lower tail feathers. But as the "VAM-18" full coin reve...

That works for me. As I said, discoveries are not a huge deal for me anymore. Adding to the (small) pile.

Re: 1900-O VAM-54

Okay. Does this one look promising and if it crosses your desk and appear correct in hand, would that be sufficient to fully list? If it gets Discovery that is great, but not a huge deal to me.

1900-O VAM-54

Adding some old raw dollars to a ANACS order to ship out. I labeled this one's flip "1900-O VAM-54". However, the current listings here have VAM-54A only. No mint mark is shown, but the date position matches and their is a fine crack that seems to match the heavier one with the breaks of the 54A. Mi...

Re: 1880 VAMS 11 AND 11A

Don't know who put the "Highest grade known" sticker on that MS64 but I have had both varieties in PCGS MS66 and quite a number of MS65. I suspect there were bags (or at least a bag) of them in some bank hoard as, with the exception of an occasional (but scarce) AU, they just do not come around circ...

Anniversary

It just occurred to me, and correct me if I am wrong, but yesterday (28 Feb) was the 145th anniversary of the Bland-Allison Act. If so, we (the SSDC) should put it on the calendar to do something interesting to commemorate it in 5 years.

Re: Clashed 1921-S

Exactly. Didn't know of the scoreboard. But the upper reverse clash transfers are uncommon with E clashes except in extraordinarily strong clashes or double clashes. Unfortunately the counterparts on the obverse (reverse devices transferred) are not easily found due to the structure of the obverse d...

Re: Clashed 1921-S

Any hint of cotton blossom clash transfer in the lower right field? That is commonly correlated and the clashing at the n/In is often not there or strong on E transfers.

Re: Several local show picks...

Yeah, the original attributions for the Peace Top 50 labeled a lot of VAM-1V as VAM-1B. I forget, but the VAM-1V might not have been yet discovered and listed. Actually, I am pretty sure the VAM-1V was listed a year or so after the Top 50 was published and attributions made by the TPGs.

Re: SSDC Inventory question

Raw coins are too problematic. We were careful as to which TPGs to admit. When it comes to raw coins, it would be impossible to keep them straight and uniquely identify them. It would become a real mess in time as raw coins end up getting slabbed and are dually represented. (Same can happen with cro...

Reunited with an old VAM friend

The first VAM discovery I had was the 1896-O VAM-10A, nearly 20 years ago. It was a PCGS MS62PL though. So I could not responsibly keep it like a first dollar to frame and put on the wall. Long since sold and probably in a major set today. Well, here at Long Beach, someone walked up with a box of co...

I bought absolutely nothing at the show. It was an enormous exercise in self-control too. Did enjoy seeing others' acquisitions a great deal though. Almost as satisfying? Hmm.

Never have been prepared to go to a major coin show so fast and early. Bringing all of the Trade dollars, since I am doing a presentation on Trade die varieties. The problem is that twelve years later the database service, the operating system, and the web service daemon all have changed quite significantly.
