Re: Unsure how to proceed

It was struck with a slight relative pitch between the dies. Look at the serif starvation on the I of UNITED and the increasingly mushy fill in the reverse motto as you look from left to right.

Re: Unsure how to proceed

One of my discoveries, 1884 VAM-17, had weird gouges/scratches in the legend, by the E and last left star though. Might have a similar cause.

Re: new addition to 1921-P 3A1A-3A1B-3A2-3A3-3A4 family

Dennis, It looks like the pages on here have 3A1b and 3A1c reversed. I did not get an update this year; so I do not have the listings as they stand. OTOH, I have one I want to list for sale but want to make sure it is correct and agrees with the listings, official and here. Mine has the tailfeather ...

Re: Letter about 1891-O "E" transfer

Would be interesting to find correspondence between the mint directors of Philadelphia and New Orleans on this matter.

Re: Letter about 1891-O "E" transfer

ok. that is just awesome when you put those 2 posts together. 1891-O VAM-1A Discovered by Robert Preston 1891 !!! Nice touch adding that correct discovery to the 1A1 page here. But one wonders if Russ' 1A4 was the "fractured" state on at least one of the coins sent. Nonetheless a very cool find fro...

SSDC Registry Status

I got the circuit transitioned from copper to fibre to increase our bandwidth by 40x-50x. New equipment. AT&T dropped the ball in configuring their routers and their tech support was next to useless. Fed up, I fixed the routing problem (not disclosing what I did to fix it). Apologize for the outage....

Re: 1923 TOP 50 VAM 1V

Before the 1V was discovered a considerable number of them were slabbed and attributed as 1B. Might still occasionally see one in a VAM-1B attributed holder.

Not a counterfeit as the Mint claims that there are no 1964-D dollars. The prototypes were claimed to have been all received back and destroyed along with the dies. Carr's production blog further points out distinct die markers for his overstrike tokens. Not saying they are not without controversy,...

Re: OT - What would you do?

Pre-Covid, I would get a cheap SW ticket and deliver it. Can get 60lbs in the overhead and/or under the seat. I did that once too. Direct flight to buyer's city, he met me at the bottom of the escalator and we had coffee a few steps away. Then I handed him my carry-on bag, went back up the escalato...

Re: Back from LVA

Fun date. The one coin I have been looking for since the early 1980s is of that date. VAM-3A. Probably does not exist as a real Mint produced listable mint mark. But the coin imaged in the VAM telephone book does, somewhere out there. I have looked at many, many of the date, especially raw, for it. ...

The position of the beginning of the break is not the same as your suspect break. Here is an example shot from my EDS of the 2A.

Re: 1886-O Die Clash?

Typical cotton blossom clash transfer. Not listable currently by itself. I have not, to my knowledge, had a VAM-8A, to know if its date is at the near edge of normal, but perhaps look for the mint mark transfer and noted ear polish.
