Re: New VAM-e Sent - Michael Fey Buys LVA Assets

Fascinating! Very curious to see how this develops. Also very curious about my package now with LVA - hope it didn't get sold to Dr. Fey. Was just preparing what to send LVA next for a few potential 21P kills before year-end, but I guess I'll have to address those issues later with "the new guard" w...

Re: 1921-P D2 polishing (VAM 3DV EDS)

Thanks for that feedback, agreement, and photos, Dennis! I'm waiting for a small parcel to come back from Sydney Ohio soon, but I may pursue this in my next submission/conversation with LVA. I think I have enough of a range of die states to show its history. I was also thinking I may try to show tha...

Re: 1921-P D2 polishing VAM 3DV - same as VAM 3AN EDS?

Dennis, might VAM 3DV be a duplicate for VAM 3AN EDS? Both my VAM 3DV examples match the other markers for 3AN1.

Re: 1921-P VAM-3P

Thanks for updating that, Brent!

I think the decimal makes sense. Numeric suffixes are used for stages; with the decimal, it usually means die pair number.

Some 78P / 83P / 85-O / 21P on Great Collections ending 10/3 and 10/10

Hi gang, I have some coins up for sale on Great Collections both this coming weekend and the next. Since I think I know the VAMs, of all of them, I might as well post them here. All are starting at low “as suggested by Great Collections” pricing. Thank you for your consideration! Ending Sunday Octob...

Re: Back from Leroy

Hooray a 1921-P kill! I presume that means 20A becomes 89A? I agree with vampicker that VAM 20A was a different die pair than VAM 20, and it isn't related to VAM 89. Since I have an EDS, non-pitted VAM 20A as well, perhaps I may try to resolve their nomenclature at some point... Congrats, vampicker!

Re: Need 1921-P help before going to LVA

Hey Dennis,

I have an example that matches these features, and I've filed it under VAM 1BE. I think that's accurate.

21P die crack break guide - guidance / discussion

Hi gang, So is there a write-up anywhere regarding proper size and formatting for photos for the 21P D1 and D2 die crack break guides? I wanted to take a crack (har har) at documenting a couple I keep bumping into, specifically VAMs 3BB and 3CV. Is there someone that typically oversees vetting and/o...

Re: Odd things on 1921-P D1s

Great observations, Dennis!

I >told< you that the dot and denticle lines >by themselves< don't constitute a D1 obverse match. Good to see you point out other things that are so common in the D1 set that they're not really PUPs.

Re: Have I met my match? (1921-P D1)

Thanks Tom. I agree that my VSS 88A is actually a 1BQ. I was making a public teasing of J.B. in the hope he would see it. But it looks like my unknown coin in this thread is going to wind up filling that 88A hole I now have in my SSDC date set. :D What do you think of this idea: The more I lo...

Re: Have I met my match? (1921-P D1)

Dennis, you of all people should know by now that the 21P series is a hall of mirrors, and that the only gospel is what LVA says. But even he is tricked, because he usually doesn't have the original reference examples to reexamine. JR and JB are both fine, fabulous, wonderful, knowledgeable assets t...

Re: Have I met my match? (1921-P D1)

I don't agree that the 1BQ is an EDS of 88A or related to the 88A; the scratches and scribbles on my 88A (which match both of the plate photos) don't match that of the 1BQ. What JR/VSS called an 88A is really a 1BQ.

So I guess I'm back to your 88A is really a 1BQ and your "what is it" is a LDS 88A.

Hey Dennis,

The picture you posted of your "88A" sure looks a lot like this photo posted on the page for the "1BQ":

Re: Have I met my match? (1921-P D1)

Wait - the reverse scribbles on your "88A" doesn't match those on my (ANACS attributed) 88A, which does have the leg gouges.

Re: Have I met my match? (1921-P D1)

Now I'm going to throw a huge monkey wrench into this discussion. Here is a photo of the scribbles on my VSS-attributed VAM 88A, which is obviously the same coin Mitch used to take the 6 small photos that appear at the bottom of the VAM 88A attribution page: 1838438-109 scribbles.jpg If you compare...

Re: Have I met my match? (1921-P D1)

LVA gives a VAM number to the first coin he sees from a new pair, but there's no telling where that coin falls – early, middle or late – in the sequence of all listable features that may ultimately be associated with that VAM. Precisely. And folks then send in single samples, out of order, and we e...

Re: Have I met my match? (1921-P D1)

Huh. This implies that the obverse denticle wear happened before the reverse leg polishing lines; you perhaps more properly have a VAM 88 LDS there, and not really the die stage LVA called VAM 88A.
