Re: 1883-P VAM-20+ LDS Doubled date, stars, motto, LITY in LIBERTY. etc.

Many of the 83P die pairs clashed and had somewhat significant breaks; I spent some time presenting LVA with progression examples of various dies to try and show how they changed over time. Very few of them seemed to merit differentiation to him. I still think there should be a VAM 17C... Before you...

Re: What I attributed as a 1921 V-3BS appears to be a V-3BE with no obverse or reverse die cracks?

I am inclined to agree with your more recent assessment that it is VAM 3BE EDS.

Re: Is there a trick to photographing overstruck coins to make the original more visible?

There are different scanning techniques that can work, as Roger pointed out; not a lot can be done with simple optics.

I've thought about scanning some of the Brazil 960 reis overstrikes for which I can't quite make out what's underneath...

Re: Finding buyers who aren’t dealers….

I'll be a second voice in favor of GC, and point out that unlike Heritage they have no minimum submission.

Dealers buy the holder, collectors buy the coin. Post good photos of a pretty coin in the BST thread you might see results.

Re: 1921-P VAMs 81,81A,3FW,3BQ1 &3BQ2

Thank you for making those changes, fogie! Sorry to keep messing with the 21P set.

Two other discrepancies between the 21P VAMworld page and the SSDC set are that the set isn't showing the VAM 1BU yet and for some reason VAM 3HG isn't listed.

Re: 1921P potential duplicate listings

Hey Dennis,
Your first photo pretty clearly matches VAM 3BQ3.
Your second photo shows an earlier die state than what I sent JB, so I would call that VAM 3BQ1 EDS.

Re: 1921P potential duplicate listings

Have the 3BQ1-2-3-4 stages pages been created? It does look like JB created the 3BQ3 and 3BQ4 pages, but pictures need to be reassigned from the 3BQ1/3BQ2 pages. I was trying to point out that there were at least three distinct die stages, but it got broken into four; 3BQ1: Before reverse polishing...

Re: 1921P potential duplicate listings

VAM 3Gi is retired, as it is redundant with VAM 3EF
Also, VAM 81/81A have been retired and divided into four stages, VAMs 3BQ1/2/3/4

Re: 1921 Morgan with Feeder Finger Die Gouges

These sort of gouges develop over time, so they're not always listed as part of a VAM description because they aren't inherent in the dies. What constitutes a gouge significant enough for separate LDS listing isn't entirely clear to me. There are a lot of examples of feed finger gouges over ED and A...

Re: 1921 Morgan with Feeder Finger Die Gouges

Could you please confirm that it's a D2 / 16 berry? There are a couple varieties that do have some feed finger activity in these areas, so another closeup somewhere else would help. Personally, I don't often look at the scribbles area because they flatten out so quickly as the die ages; I often look...

Always send item shown in pictures
Never a problem
Hope that helps

I very much agree, although I will also note that a lot of their ebay auctions are "this is a stock image" so the item you get isn't what is pictured, so watch for the specifics of the auction.

Re: What is a Die Study?

One word of caution - it's easy to start a die study, but it is rare to find full closure.

I feel that closure, at least for now, with the 1885 O set. But not for either the 1899 P or 1883 P sets.
I still have my white whales that compel me to keep searching, searching...

Re: What is a Die Study?

People can pursue it differently, but typically a die study is for a particular year and mintmark. In such a pursuit, one tries to find not only examples of each die pair, but also to understand how each evolved, from early die state (with fine polishing lines and clear doubling) to late die state (...

Old discovery coin surprises

Sometimes seeing an old discovery coin changes how you perceive a die pair, or gives new insight. I remember when I was doing my 83P die study, it was already well documented what an 83P VAM 1A was; all ANACS and VSS attributed examples were the same. In the course of dialog with LVA, I sent in some...

Re: scribbles pix for 1921-P VAM 3FW page

It has been previously postulated that VAM 3FW is the same as VAM 81. Recently, VAM 81/81A were retired, as these listings were folded into VAM 3BQ, now as VAM 3BQ1 and 3BQ2. These photos Dennis posted do appear, to me, to match that of VAM 3BQ1. It is posted on the 1921P page that VAM 3FW needs to ...

Hopefully my 1878CC VAM 24A PCGS XF40 with a VSS sticker will show up soon for sale on GC (they've had it for well over a month and assigned it a lot number but not yet an auction date, will edit this post when listed) EDIT: Finally posted. Lot ends 9/3. Low starting bid https://www.greatcollections...
