Re: 1883-cc - Would like it to be a 5d but I think C Thoughts

The VAM 5 has soooo many stages. Clash, polish, polish, clash, polish, clash, clash, polish - I'm working on a listing of stages, but it is difficult to enumerate them all. Your example looks like it is later than VAM 5C, but earlier than VAM 5D. If there is no discernible letter transfer, then I th...

Re: Morgan 1921-P VAM-3GO VLDS

Interesting! My latest die state example shows the break at F in OF but not the lower break into R.

The VAM 3GO is duplicated by the VAM 3HO, unless Dennis has taken steps to revise that listing..

Re: Show us your LVA fails

I only have one that I can think of. When I was doing the 1883P die study I sent him one that he thought had distinctive features for a listing, but it was also toned and had machine doubling. "So I need to see untoned coin without doubling to list and photograph". Still haven't found another exampl...

Re: 1883CC - VAM 4 or 8?

Hey Terence,

Looks like a VAM 8. Thanks for posting that photo of the "we" as that gouge is a very clear diagnostic. For the VAM 4, the second C of the mintmark is tilted more upward, so I say VAM 8.

Re: 1883-CC mini die study (VAM 2 has VAM 3 LDS reverse)

I'm working on a listing of stages for the VAM 5, and should have a draft ready shortly. I'm certainly going to want input from the group, as there seem to be a couple possible stages that I can't find specific examples for... Speaking of 83CC stages, perhaps this is a question mostly for vampicker ...

Re: 1878-CC Morgan

Hey mvgebhard, There are two types of reverse dies used on 78-CC mintage. B1 reverse is Long Nock, B2 reverse is Short Nock. The other main differentiator to help narrow down attribution is whether the fourth star on the right is broken or not. I find this page helps me with finding the correct VAM ...

I agree, VAM 21.
It's that prominent doubling of the B on the obverse and N on the reverse that give this one away!

Re: Morgan 1921-P VAM-93 = EDS of VAM-57

I agree that it looks like VAM 93 is the same as VAM 57 / 57A. Good work! I have an ANACS-attributed VAM 57A if that might help. As long as we're revising this listing, I think it helps to send as full a die progression as possible just to have the most accurate description and differentiation betwe...

Re: 1883-CC mini die study (VAM 2 has VAM 3 LDS reverse)

Matches what I've found exactly. The deeper dive is adding all the minor stages. I think VAM 5 deserves this, in the same way the 78P 116 was expanded from four LVA listings to the seven stages. I'll need some more time, patience, and representative examples before I can make any such delineation, ...

1883-CC mini die study (VAM 2 has VAM 3 LDS reverse)

Hi gang, I decided to venture out toward other mintage regions and collect the 78CC and 83CC sets. They both seemed like reasonable, bounded sets and that I wouldn’t really find anything new. For the 1883-CC varieties, it was pretty easy to find examples of VAMs 3, 4, 5, and 8, along with their vari...

Re: 1878 VAM 70A - new stage listing

My DMPL example has those breaks.
I also have a non-prooflike, later die state example where the breaks are slightly stronger and thicker. Hmmmm.

It seems unwise to send in singular coins to LVA for a die stage revision; there should be EDS/LDS examples to show clear differentiation.

Re: Need Help identify this 1883 cc possible vam

The VAM 5 subdivisions are a bit of a dog's breakfast, mostly since VAM 5 went through so many stages. It started out pristine and prooflike but with some polishing lines (5) then got clashed (5A), then some repeated cycles of polishing (back to 5) and clashing (5A if there was transfer of the n and...

Re: Need Help identify this 1883 cc possible vam

The flashing at the wingtips indicates that this is somewhere in the VAM 5 spectrum.
It could be a VAM 5B, but check the back of the cap for counterclash, as it looks like this is more likely VAM 5D.

Re: confused: 1878 VAM 130C2 vs. 130C3

I think that's correct, in that there isn't actually a 130C2 stage. At least, I don't have one and have never seen one. There are four examples listed in the SSDC registry, though. The whole "letter suffix to signify a particular late stage attribute" aspect of LVA's nomenclature is ripe for splitti...

Re: confused: 1878 VAM 130C2 vs. 130C3

Hey Dennis,

I think it goes:

130C1 - weak nostril. May have start of break above cap.
130C2 - break above cap has developed displaced field. May have cracks into U and E, but not displaced field.
130C3 - crack into U has developed displaced field.

Re: 1883 cc Morgan - Is it a 4a OR 8a / And what is that line under the "Dollar"

Looks to me like it's a VAM 5A. That line at the neck and below the DOL are characteristic polishing lines of this die pair. And there's that blotch below the 18, with the CC centered. With VAM 4 it leans up, VAM 8 it leans down.

And no, I haven't yet seen an actual VAM 4A.
