Re: Ebuyer Beware!

It would be amazing if this 78-CC really did have a Peace Dollar reverse...

Re: Just opened my mail look at what I found

Hi JB, Yes, the VAM 12 does appear to have a very faint dash under the second 8. It's so light that LVA probably didn't include it in the original description of the die; it is even fainter on LDS examples. Maybe this VAM 35 has a different reverse pairing, but from here it still looks like a VAM 12...

Re: 1885-o Morgan VAM-24 with Belly button.

Minor dishing of the eagle can happen on other 85-O, but they are most prominent on the VAM 24. When I was cleaning up the 85-O listings a couple years ago, I sent a range of VAM 24 examples to LVA and asked whether this was a "variety". He replied: "All of these 'belly buttons' are caused by slight...

Re: Just opened my mail look at what I found

That thread impression on the lip matches the one on the VAM 12.

I guess I'm having trouble seeing how this is different than the 85-O VAM 12...

Re: 1885-o VAM-2 Early Die State?

It does look like a VAM 2, and I do think it would be EDS. I think the die scratch is referring to the one noted below.

You can see this die scratch even in later die states, so it's not really an EDS indicator. The doubling of the arrowheads sort of fades over time.

worth a dollar in the US in 1804.
Well, it wasn't legal tender until the congressional act of April 10th, 1806.
But it's a pretty example of an eight reales!

PCGS cert doesn't match. Clearly not a MS66:

Re: 1921-Ps back from LVA

I just found an MS66, but there's no way I'd even consider buying it without being able to give it a VAM attribution. Heh. My two examples are both in PCGS holders - one is a MS63 and the other is indeed an MS66. I sent the 66 to JB just to see what he'd say, so now it's sporting a "VAM 3" VSS labe...

Re: 1921-Ps back from LVA

It's weird that you got "not enough" for those two, Dennis. LVA will often say that if the examples submitted are worn, have machine doubling, or are toned, but yours seem like good, clear specimens.

I remain curious about what we can/should call "not enough #1" as I have two nice examples...

Congrats on the revisions, additions and corrections, Dennis!

Regarding the "not enough" examples, did LVA just call those VAM 1 / 3?
Was one of those the one that you posted about a while ago, with the break through the N in ONE?

Re: Great Collections web site

Hi Kenny I have used GC a lot. I have to give them two thumbs up. By far, the best company I have dealt with in selling my excess inventory. I have not had any luck selling coins thru them with VSS stickers. They have sent them back to me stating they could not list them. I have never called them t...

Re: is leroy available to play with coins yet?

I do not think there is anything preventing anyone from designating VAM-xxx, other than the recognition that to do so would thoroughly confuse an already complex system. It is testimony to the discipline of the VAM community that LVA continues to be the central clearinghouse for the official positi...

Re: is leroy available to play with coins yet?

To be clear, anyone at any time can "take the lead" by going off and making their own nomenclature. If it is significantly detailed, robust, and helpful, then numismatic community will begin to adopt those naming conventions. Most of us here on VAMWorld respect the time and effort that George and Le...

I agree that this isn't a VAM 101. I also can't place it.
Fascinating that you have four of them! Hope we can identify it!

Re: Obverse for 1883 CC

i see in peoples posts that narrowing the choice is made easier by looking for "die markers". Excuse a newbie's ignorance but what are they? A "die marker" is simply any prominent feature in the die that would be included in any listing for that VAM. What sort of markers these are can vary by date ...

Re: Obverse for 1883 CC

I believe you are right, expat! That pattern of cribble below the 18 as well as the gouge in the eagle's mouth are both very characteristic of the VAM 5. And since there are prominent polishing lines on the reverse and no sign of a clash, it looks like the early die state before any clash occurred.

Re: searching a vam for 1883CC uncirculated

There are only 13 known varieties of 1883-CC. All have photo attribution pages here on VAMworld and your photos are plenty good enough to find your answer going one-by-one. In fact, your shot of the date is all you need. I have always totally ignored 1883-CCs, but I found your VAM pretty quickly. I...
