Re: Great Collections web site

Hi Kenny I have used GC a lot. I have to give them two thumbs up. By far, the best company I have dealt with in selling my excess inventory. I have not had any luck selling coins thru them with VSS stickers. They have sent them back to me stating they could not list them. I have never called them t...

Re: is leroy available to play with coins yet?

I do not think there is anything preventing anyone from designating VAM-xxx, other than the recognition that to do so would thoroughly confuse an already complex system. It is testimony to the discipline of the VAM community that LVA continues to be the central clearinghouse for the official positi...

Re: is leroy available to play with coins yet?

To be clear, anyone at any time can "take the lead" by going off and making their own nomenclature. If it is significantly detailed, robust, and helpful, then numismatic community will begin to adopt those naming conventions. Most of us here on VAMWorld respect the time and effort that George and Le...

I agree that this isn't a VAM 101. I also can't place it.
Fascinating that you have four of them! Hope we can identify it!

Re: Obverse for 1883 CC

i see in peoples posts that narrowing the choice is made easier by looking for "die markers". Excuse a newbie's ignorance but what are they? A "die marker" is simply any prominent feature in the die that would be included in any listing for that VAM. What sort of markers these are can vary by date ...

Re: Obverse for 1883 CC

I believe you are right, expat! That pattern of cribble below the 18 as well as the gouge in the eagle's mouth are both very characteristic of the VAM 5. And since there are prominent polishing lines on the reverse and no sign of a clash, it looks like the early die state before any clash occurred.

Re: searching a vam for 1883CC uncirculated

There are only 13 known varieties of 1883-CC. All have photo attribution pages here on VAMworld and your photos are plenty good enough to find your answer going one-by-one. In fact, your shot of the date is all you need. I have always totally ignored 1883-CCs, but I found your VAM pretty quickly. I...

Yup, that looks like a VAM 116. My original submission example also has that first left berry cluster scratch. Yours looks to be a little bit more LDS than mine.

Re: OT: old foreign overdate

That's some cool gold you're all posting! I've recently gotten into the Brazilian 960 Reis coins of the early 19th century. Each one is a fun puzzle, as they're mostly all overstrikes over some other coin, mostly colonial 8 Reales. So here's a triple - it's an 1817R Brazil 960R struck over a 1816R B...

Re: Ended yesterday; I did not bid. Doubting Thomas.

Heh. I had not this exact one, but basically the same thing, being an old small white-label ANACS holder where the label said 166 and it was really a 160. I toyed for a long time with the idea of selling it anonymously through something like Teletrade, but I ended up sending it back to ANACS with a ...

Re: 1883-cc - Would like it to be a 5d but I think C Thoughts

The VAM 5 has soooo many stages. Clash, polish, polish, clash, polish, clash, clash, polish - I'm working on a listing of stages, but it is difficult to enumerate them all. Your example looks like it is later than VAM 5C, but earlier than VAM 5D. If there is no discernible letter transfer, then I th...

Re: Morgan 1921-P VAM-3GO VLDS

Interesting! My latest die state example shows the break at F in OF but not the lower break into R.

The VAM 3GO is duplicated by the VAM 3HO, unless Dennis has taken steps to revise that listing..

Re: Show us your LVA fails

I only have one that I can think of. When I was doing the 1883P die study I sent him one that he thought had distinctive features for a listing, but it was also toned and had machine doubling. "So I need to see untoned coin without doubling to list and photograph". Still haven't found another exampl...

Re: 1883CC - VAM 4 or 8?

Hey Terence,

Looks like a VAM 8. Thanks for posting that photo of the "we" as that gouge is a very clear diagnostic. For the VAM 4, the second C of the mintmark is tilted more upward, so I say VAM 8.

Re: 1883-CC mini die study (VAM 2 has VAM 3 LDS reverse)

I'm working on a listing of stages for the VAM 5, and should have a draft ready shortly. I'm certainly going to want input from the group, as there seem to be a couple possible stages that I can't find specific examples for... Speaking of 83CC stages, perhaps this is a question mostly for vampicker ...

Re: 1878-CC Morgan

Hey mvgebhard, There are two types of reverse dies used on 78-CC mintage. B1 reverse is Long Nock, B2 reverse is Short Nock. The other main differentiator to help narrow down attribution is whether the fourth star on the right is broken or not. I find this page helps me with finding the correct VAM ...
