Re: What was “routine” correspondence like between the mints and Headquarters in Washington ?
The reason I "passed" over the comment about keeping employees busy is because I have seen that before in correspondence, likely in the Annual Reports from the Director of the Mint. They recognized that loosing trained employees cost more than finding them busy work. The same thing is done today by ...

Some folks say "toe-may-toe", some say "toe-mah-toe".

Re: Vams Struggle Continues
Two points. 1. If you are into VAMs to make money, then you are likely making a mistake. Sure, you can cherry pick a V23A and make a lot of money, but nothing to retire on. But good luck with that. Name me ONE person that solely makes their living on VAMs. 2. As far as detailed VAM descriptions and ...

Re: What was “routine” correspondence like between the mints and Headquarters in Washington ?
I hate to prolong this discussion, but here goes. As your mint has had comparatively little experience in coining gold, I have to request that you will instruct the operating officers to exercise every care to see that the gold coins comply with the law in every particular as to weight and fineness....

All I see is that the Mint Bureau HQ did not trust the NO mint, implying they did shoddy work.

Examples of the EDS (w/o die chip) and LDS (with die chip) are now in my possession. They will be going to FUN and submitted to see what the attributors say.

Re: 1884 S VAM?
The VAM-7 S/S reverse die was used with a second, different obverse die. The date photo on the VAM-7 page is the other obverse die. This is the challenge of an open wiki.

If this was my coin I would call it VAM-7. This is not the UFO die pair.

Re: Site maintenance
Doug, if you are referring to the VAM Plates from the Encyclopedia, they are owned by Coin Universe as I recall. As such, they are copyrighted and as far as I know we do not have permission to use them on VW. Enthusiastic folks were putting them on VW 1.0, but there was a large effort to go thru and...

Re: 1901 O VAM?
My two cents. Date: The crack at 01 in the date matches the VAM-35 VAM plate. Even though I see the date placement as normal, LVA could have seen a far date when he listed it. Wouldn't be the first time. Mint Mark: Looks high to me. C4 Reverse & Reverse Legend Doubling: C4 reverses (and C4/C3) notor...

Not to throw a monkey wrench into this, but the date looks like a normal placement to me, not far.

Re: Leroy Explains C4/C3 Reverses
If you think about it, this raises an interesting conundrum. At least to me it does. If this work by Leroy happened at the beginning of 1979, then is it possible that any early 1900 to 1904 VAM listings prior to 1979 could have actually been a C4/C3 reverse but listed as a C4 or C3? As such, I am al...

Re: 1902P - Has me stumped
Couple of things. This comes from my 1902-O study. 1. At the time anyway Leroy told me he liked to see the LEB1 squarely over the middle of the 2nd denticle to be called a Very Near Date. Seemed odd to me but at that time he made the rules. 2. I asked about doubled profiles on a number of coins. Hi...
