Re: Scarce EDS of 78-S VAM 16 now VAM 16A

The 1st edition VAM book by Leroy Van Allen& A. George Mallis did not have photos of 78-S VAM-16. The 1st edition only listed 78-S VAMs 1 to 11. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th editions had V-16 photos and one of the reverse photos was with the die gouge on the field. So, the gouge on the field has been known...

Re: 1878s VAM-109

In my notes I have order of production as 109, 100, 65, 10.
Don't have notes on what attributes were used to determine this order or where I saw this order.

Re: 1878s VAM-109

The II8 obverse of the V-109 is shared with V-10, V-65, and V-100.
My 109 has a very noticeable eye spike.
My V-100 and V-65 have the same noticeable spike but shorter than V-109.
My V-10 is low grade (F12), and I cannot see a spile.
In the photos V-109 and V-65 it looks like two spikes.

Re: 1878-S Dies used May 15 to June 30, 1878

Thanks for the info. I did find a train schedule that had a page that indicated time between Omaha and SF. It says the time required between Omaha and SF is, for Express Train 4½ days. Did not find anything about Omaha to East coast. The distance from Omaha to SF is 1665 miles. The distance from Oma...

Same Obverse 78S V-88 & V-112

A month or so ago Clay C identified that 78-S V-88 and V-112. have the same obverse.
I noticed a little while ago that the V-88 and V-112 have not been updated identifying the same obverse.
Is there someone on the forum that has the privileges to do an update.
Thanks in advance.

Re: 1878-S Vam 62 (Long Nock)

This an excellent find. I agree a V-62.
Mintmark is set higher than normal (but not a high as V-60) and set further left than the other Long Nocks.

No clashing on this V-17. I consider it a V-17 DS3.

I have been looking for one of these for a while and finally found one.
I have seen one where the gouge goes thru the hair and continues for a short while onto the field.

Re: Phonescope Smartphone Digital Microscope

My son got me an Insignia Mobile Photography Kit a while back. I tried it on an iPhone and an iPad. The macro lens had to be so close to the coin (Morgan dollar) that there was not enough room for light to get on the dollar for an acceptable photo. I could not figure out how to get enough light, so ...
